Physics 5001 Syllabus - Fall 2015

This document outlines the syllabus for Physics 5001 being taught in the fall of 2015. It provides key details such as the instructor (Tony Gherghetta) and their contact information, textbook requirements, exam dates, grading policies, and a tentative course schedule. Students will be evaluated based on their highest quiz score, average homework grade, and final exam, with each component accounting for 20%, 40%, and 40% of the final grade respectively. Topics to be covered include basic principles, one dimensional problems, harmonic oscillators, uncertainty relations, identical particles, symmetries, and angular momentum.

Textbook
The textbook for the course is Principles of Quantum Mechanics by R. Shankar, 2nd
edition, Kluwer Academic/Plenum Press.
Other recommended texts that you may find useful:
Quantum Mechanics, F. Schwabl (electronic copy is available at www.lib.umn.edu).
Modern Quantum Mechanics, J.J. Sakurai.
Quantum Mechanics: Non-relativistic Theory, L.D. Landau and E.M. Lifshitz.

Quizzes and Final Exam

There will be two in-class quizzes. The dates are October 7, 2015 and November
11, 2015.
The final exam is on Monday, December 21, 2015, 1:30 4:30PM in Akerman
209.

Homework
Homework will be assigned each Tuesday and will be due the following Tuesday in your
Discussion Session. Working with other students on the homework is acceptable and
sometimes may be beneficial, provided you actively participate in the problem solving;
however each student must submit his/her own work.

Grade determination
Your grade will be based on the quiz with the highest score (20%), the average score
of your graded homework problems (40%) and the final exam (40%).

Course Outline (Tentative)

Students will be expected to review the material in Chapters 1-3 of Shankar on their
own.
