1. Use of Big Data- Use of aggregated data across a large sample of users for insights into
the design and adaptation of curricula. (Weiss, 2015)
2. Adaptive Learning Technologies- Software and online platforms that adjust to
individual students needs as they learn based on data collected. (NMC, 2015)
3. Interactive Video Learning- The practise of making the video player itself interactive.
It can be used for the facilitation of in-video quizzes and surveys. Interactive Video
Learning Technology is not yet mainstream, but could become increasingly popular
within two years. (Parson, 2015)
4. Digital Badges- Digital Badges are seen as a way to grant certification for formal and
informal learning in the form of microcredits, which assess learned skills. (NMC, 2015)
5. Gamified Learning and Assessment- Gamification in mobile devices provide
educational content is a fun way. It provides an easy method to teach abstract concepts
such as team building and decision making. (Origin Learning, 2015)
6. Mobiles as devices for competency based learning- In the area of competency
building; mobile devices are and will continue to play the important role of augmenting
training beyond the classroom. It is common to see mobile videos and simulators used in
various industry segments for corporate training. (Origin Learning, 2015)
7. Geo- Location Sensitive Learning- The GPS capability of mobile devices facilitate
learning design models that are authentic, personalized, and context aware. Learning
design based on these technologies means learners can have real-time dashboards to
monitor their progress and access to the right content or experts based on geo-location.
(Weiss, 2015)

8. Social Mobile Learning- Mobile supported Learning Management Systems

(LMS) with social features are rapidly changing how employees interact with each other
to share knowledge and drive innovation. (Weiss, 2015)

9. Bite Sized Information- Mobile devices could be used to deliver on-demand

performance support in quick and concise packages. (NMC, 2015)
10. Wearable Devices- Improved capacity and continued used of wearable technology in the
classroom. (Origin Learning, 2015)

Reflection
I was very sceptical about doing this assignment specifically because it involved looking out at
least one year into the future and making projections about possible trends. I started the process
by conducting several basic internet searches and found some blog posts by Weiss and other
futurists in the field. I then came across some reports by popular e-learning websites and some
reports by the New Media Corporation and started compiling my list of ten trends. It was
difficult agreeing on the trends as I kept wondering whether these were really future trends or
already in widespread adoption.
It was the first time I actually created an infographic. I have always seen them on Pinterest but
never tried to create one. I used a template which I customized using the information derived
from the research. I was delighted to conduct research into emerging technologies and concepts
in the field Instructional Design and Distance and look forward to future research in the field.
