Reflective Statement: ELA

The ELA framework serves as a helping tool for teachers. It has helped me to understand
the five key themes of wide and comprehensive instructional program in ELA for my students.
This consists of meaning making, language development, effective expression, content
knowledge and foundational skills. Being able to teach English Language Arts in an elementary
classroom means I will be well equipped with the necessary knowledge about reading, writing,
speaking, listening, and language. I have to admit that one difficulty I still have is reading out
loud, I usually would read in silence. In my ELA classes, I found out that I had difficulties in
pronunciations of words. It seems as though I did not have a strong foundation growing up as a
child, in reading and language development but my overall experience in various ELA classes,
have helped me to improve on my reading and pronunciation of words. I would love to help my
students develop their knowledge in English by learning, expanding and enriching ideas of words
and content.
My ELA classes and Field classroom experience were a spectacular time for me in
school. I have gained various skills necessary for me to be a good teacher and noticed
improvement in my reading comprehension because of my English classes. My English 1A, 1B
and 1C classes, which I took at El Camino College, have been very helpful. My teacher taught on
various subjects matter like reading and writing composition, strategies and functions of writing.
I also learned the importance of time management while teaching. My teachers were very
effective in the use of their time, but never failed to make sure that each student was able to
illustrate how multiple themes like historical, geographic and social studies are interrelated and
make basic interferences or logical predictions from data or texts, describe how word choice,

point of view, or bias may affect the reader interpretations of a text. I also learned in my English
487 class how to do morphology, phonology projects and the use of grammatical functions. I
found it to be very interesting and educational.
My artifact is on word forms, which was taught in my English 487 class. It deals on the
appearance of a word that can be used to relate or identify something. My teacher gave us an
exercise to locate word forms errors in sentences and supply the correct form of the word. This
exercise shows my improvement and knowledge on how to spot errors in sentences while
following the Common Core State Standards. My artifact aims to show my understanding of the
common word form errors learned. This experience connects to the Grade 2 and 3 standards. It
also shows my ability to show meaning of unknown and multiple meaning words and phrases.
It would be a pleasure to help my students in their ELA knowledge to become better readers,
learners and overall build confidence in them by knowing that they can read. My English class
strategy included some of the following, such as background knowledge, developing of outlines,
charts and diagrams, activation of student passion and identifying bench marks. It would be a joy
to help my students in the future and I am very sure that my students would find it useful and
important as learning ELA has helped them to expand their thought processes.
