Ethical Dilemma

IPM Write-Up
Situation: Right before coming in a
student came in the supervisors office and
went through her desk, drawers and
personal information. Student was filmed
leaving her office with a piece of paper in
her hand.
The supervisor was beyond
angry and found it necessary to need to
vent.

Step 1: (Gather Data) I felt bad for the

supervisor. Computer passwords, credit
card passwords, YMCA information were all
spread out across the desk. I listened to the
supervisor vent and was very empathetic.
Supervisor wanted to know what she should
do with the student and the situation.
Step 2: (Reflecting) I felt bad for the
supervisor there was a lot of risk involved
in this situation. Thinking: What if she took
passwords to the BAP personal accounts:
Amazon,
Walmart
and
other
online
shopping accounts.

Step 3: (Identifying) Police, meetings with

parents and/or denial of the BAP. Must remember
this program is to teach the youth how to be better
individuals in society.
Step 4: (Dissonance) Intern Vs. Supervisor,
Assumption made of the student, my own values
and beliefs: Do something wrong you should be
punished.
Step 5: (Learning) I learned to not focus on the
situation but what caused the situation. Why did
the student do what she did? Why was she causing
so much trouble? Was something going on at
home? Why is she always coming in at odd hours?
Step 6: (Plan) Take a step back, focus on the
child and not so much the situation, dont assume,
find out the root of the problem. I did not realize
until the next day how quickly I jumped the gun
for the student to be suspended from the program.

Supervisory Relationships
Wants: Responsibility
Needs: In depth administrative focus such as grant
writing, yearly plan for activities and programs
Challenges: completing clergy responsibilities, time
spent in between fundraising event and spring time
Future Supervisor Anticipation: Plan,
Responsibilities, On-going workload

Levels of
Intervention
As a social worker at Head Start Inc. I
have had a lot of experiences working
with all four types of groups. I have
had the most experience working with
families. As a social worker I carried a
caseload of 40+ families a year
I have had the least experience
working with groups. The only
experience I have with groups is
watching some of my co-workers at my
current employment run some for our
drug and alcohol clinic.

To encompass all four levels of intervention I would

expand the program by involving events at night. I would
plan night events to encompass parents and families. The
events would not only take place for only 2 hours a
weekend. I would also plan for family workshops and not
just workshops for the teens.
After entering the field of drug and alcohol counseling I
have enjoyed working with individuals. It is great seeing
the individual change from person to person. It is great
seeing the clients at day 1 and seeing them 6-7 months
from now and their progression towards sobriety.

Throughout
my education and
experience I have learned how to
relate and empathize with people even
if I have never been in their situations.
I have learned how to speak up and
address my needs if they are not being
met. At first I did not want to address
the problems going on at my
internship but after talking with the
supervisor I realized that I can only
change my situation and I had to do
that by taking control and speaking up.

together; Getting resources for clients
such as food, shelter and/or clothing;

Cultural Differences
There are no real cultural differences
that I noticed at my internship because it is
a program focused on African Americans
aged 12-18. Some insights I noticed while
attending the program is society has a lot
of influence on everything the children do
such as music, games, clothing and
attitudes. This biggest difference in this
internship is the age difference.

I personally feel I can use my experience in

high school and college to relate to the
youth.

The greatest challenge at the internship is the language

between the children and adults. How I have dealt with it is to
keep calm and talk it out with the children to understand what
problems they have and why they feel the need to talk and behave
the way they do.

One goal is to try to relate to the children as much as possible. I

have to get them to understand that I was once in their positions
and trying to do the things they are trying to do such as get good
grades, deal with really life issues, prepare for college and figure
out what I want to do in this world.

My strengths in presenting is my creativity. I enjoy finding

different ways to present by adding information, pictures and

Taking
Care of
Yourself

I have learned from this internship that I really have to speak

up about what things I need to become knowledgeable and get
experience. I went weeks and allowed myself to do small office
work that was not beneficial. It really stressed me out because
it made me hate going to my internship and while I was there I
was miserable. Most of the time I sat around because my
supervisor did not have much for me to do.

I usually stress about what is going on and think

about how I finish my hours while managing
everything else that is going on in my life. I try to
take time to go to the movies or chill with my
friends on the weekend to relieve some stress.

Stress I experienced during my internship was

balancing all the different factors going on in my
life which include: work, internship, school,
basketball practice, piano lessons, church and a
regular social life.

I am learning to be a better planner to better

manage my time and responsibilities. Since
starting the internship I plan my whole week out
with my schedule including homework, work,
practice and personal events. It helps me better
prepare for the day.

Appreciation
I appreciate the boldness I
had to obtain to let my
supervisor know I was not
happy with how things
were going.
No regrets, every event is
a learning experience

Will be aware to research the program and the daily activities.

I will know if it fits into the type of needs/wants I am looking for
when trying to find a future internship or employer.
