Respiratory System Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for a 6th grade science class on the respiratory system. It is the second of five lessons on this topic. Students will identify and explain the different parts of the respiratory system and how oxygen and carbon dioxide move during breathing. Prior knowledge includes basic understanding of breathing and some body parts. Students may think we only breathe in oxygen. The lesson will engage students with a video on the respiratory system and questions. Students will then explore the parts by labeling diagrams and defining vocabulary. The teacher will explain how the system works and students will create posters showing the process of breathing. Students will be evaluated through a game with questions about the respiratory system.

Grade/ Grade Band: grade 6

Topic: respiratory system

Lesson # 2 in a series of 5
lessons

Brief Lesson Description:

Students will determine the different parts of the respiratory system and the function of them.
Performance Expectation(s):
Ms-ls1 Use argument supported by evidence for how the body is a system of interacting subsystems
composed of Groups of cells.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

Students will:
Identify and explain the different body parts that make up the respiratory system
Demonstrate knowledge of the respiratory paths that oxygen and carbon dioxide take during
inhalation and exhalation

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge:

Have the knowledge breathing

Have the knowledge about some part of the body.

Science & Engineering

Practices:
Engaging in Argument from
Evidence:

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Crosscutting Concepts:

Structure and Function

Cause and Effect:

-Student will see a video and

then agree about it

Students will define the causes

of the function of the
respiratory system and the
effects.

Developing and Using Models:

( Elaborate)

-Use a picture for the

respiratory system.
(engagement)

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
Students think that we breathe in only oxygen.

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NUxvJS-_0k
Students will be engaged by a video which it contain some information about the respiratory
system.
After the video the teacher will be ask some questions:
What is breathing?
Why is it important for your body?
What are the body parts that help you breathe?
What can affect how well the respiratory system works?

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:

Student will explore the respiratory system by
Students will read some of the words that relate to the system and understand their definition after
that they can guess and label the organs of the Respiratory system

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

Teacher will give student the definition of the new vocabulary for the respiratory system on a
flashcards.
Students can use Ipads to search for how the respiratory system work after that they have to tell
their friends what they found. (Reading and Discussion)
After this the teacher will explain what students said if it necessary.

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions:

Student will work together to create a poster about the respiratory system.
The poster will contain the picture of the system which students have to choose it from different

kind of body systems.

Students have to include the steps of how the human breathe.

EVALUATE:
Students will be evaluated by
A game which the teacher will put some question in a box and the box will go around student while
a song is running. If the song stop the box have to stop and the student that hold it should choose a
question to answer.

The questions:
What are the main organs
of the respiratory system?
A.nose
B.alveoli
C.lungs
The trachea filters dust.
A.true
B.false
We exhale oxygen rich air
from our lungs.
A.true

The two branches of the
trachea that connect to
each lung are _________.
