Iowa Teaching Standard #3 - Demonstrates Competence in Planning and Preparing For Instruction

This artifact describes a "Holidays Around the World" unit planned and taught by the author to third grade students. The unit aligns with Iowa Teaching Standard #3 on planning and preparing instruction. It engages students by having them learn about different holiday traditions in Mexico, China, Norway, Germany and England through stories, pictures, hands-on activities, videos and passports as they "visit" each country. Formative assessments include country worksheets while a writing activity serves as the summative assessment. The author reflects that students are highly engaged in making connections between their own traditions and those of other cultures.

Description of artifact and how the artifact meets the standard:
It is very important to plan and prepare for instruction, especially by selecting strategies to engage all students in their
learning. One example of how I engage all students in their learning is by preparing and planning for Holidays Around
the World social studies unit.
In third grade we celebrate Holidays Around the World as a social studies unit to meet the standard for learning about
other cultures. This activity engages all students to learn about different culture around the world through stories,
pictures, and hands-on activities.
Reflection on artifact (what went right, what went wrong, how to make better)
This engaging unit provides students the opportunity to see how other countries celebrate the Christmas holiday. During
this unit, the students listen to stories, participate in a hands-on activity, watch videos, and see pictures that are all related
to a specific country. The countries include Mexico, China, Norway, Germany, and England. The students are highly
engaged during this unit because they get to rotate to different countries or classroom while carrying their passport.
Students are required to fill out a worksheet for each country as a formative assessment. This unit works well with
students being able to make connections to their own traditions to the traditions from the other countries. They are able
to demonstrate their similarities and differences through a writing activity as a summative assessment. This unit is
always one that the students really enjoy because of their excitement and engagement throughout the unit.
