This document provides criteria for evaluating student science projects in three levels of achievement: Novice, Apprentice, and Expert. It includes criteria for data tables, graphs, the purpose/question of the project, identification of variables, hypotheses, materials lists, procedures, discussion of results, and conclusions. The highest level of achievement, Expert, demonstrates clear organization of data, use of averages, proper graphing techniques, well-defined questions and variables, complete materials lists and procedures, and thorough discussion and conclusions.

Data Table Criteria


Remember: A data table should help organize all your data, and include both your trial data and
your averages. A data table should be easy to read and easy for the eyes to track and understand your
numbers.

Remember: A graph is a visual representation of your data. It needs to be CLEAR and EASY TO
READ.

***Most important: A graph is made to show AVERAGES, not your


individual trial data***
Bar Graph: Use this graphic form for data that is categorical comparing to numerical
Line Graph: Use this graphic form for data that is numerical comparing to numerical
Pie Chart: Use this graphic form when you want to show a breakdown of percents of a category
