Relative Extrema Rectilinear Motion

This document discusses finding relative extrema, or maximum and minimum values, in rectilinear motion problems. It provides two examples of optimization problems: finding the maximum acceleration of a space shuttle, and determining the optimal angle for blood vessels to branch to minimize the heart's energy expenditure when pumping blood.

Introduction
Some of the most important applications of differential
calculus are optimization problems, in which we are
required to find the optimal way of doing something.
Here are examples of such problems:
1. What is the maximum acceleration of a space
shuttle?
2. At what angle should blood vessels branch so as to
minimize the energy epended by the heart in
pumping blood?
