Types of Ship

This document describes several types of cargo ships. Container ships carry most manufactured goods and products through scheduled services. Bulk carriers, known as the "work horses" of the fleet, transport raw materials like iron ore and coal and are identifiable by raised hatches covering large cargo holds. Tankers are designed to transport liquids or gases in bulk, including oil, chemicals, and gas. Reefer ships are refrigerated cargo ships used to transport perishable items like food that require temperature control. Roll-on/roll-off ships carry wheeled cargo like cars and trucks that are driven onto the ship on their own wheels or platforms.
