Standing's Relative Permeability Correlation (Part 1 - Introduction)

Effective permeability is a function of pore size distribution, wettability, saturation, and saturation history. Relative permeability is the ratio of effective permeability of a fluid to the base permeability. The base permeability can be the dry air permeability, absolute permeability, or oil permeability at irreducible water saturation. Relative permeability is measured through drainage and imbibition tests in water-oil and gas-oil systems. The experimental data must match the reservoir saturation processes. Fundamentally, fluids in pores are under capillary control and each fluid's relative permeability depends on the amount of that fluid present and the pore sizes it occupies, as fluids tend to block each other's flow through separate pore groups.
