GANAG Lesson Plan: Learning Objective

The 5th grade economics lesson teaches students how prices vary depending on location. Students will predict prices of items in different cities and research actual costs. They will create posters showing item costs in selected cities and rank the cities from cheapest to most expensive. Finally, the class will discuss their findings and why some locations have higher costs of living than others.

GANAG Lesson Plan

Teacher : Sarah Zach

Grade level: 5th Grade

Subject: Economics

Lesson Title: Oh, The Places Youll Go!

Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify how prices vary depending on where you go.

Pre-assessment Strategy:
Students will be given a list of items and they have to identify how much they think each one is worth.

Assessment Strategy: (matched to objectives)

The assessment will test the students knowledge of how prices on everyday items can vary depending on
where you purchase it.

Instructional Procedure
Access Prior Knowledge
Students will use their prior knowledge of geography and where different cities are located. Students will
also need to know currency and how to add and subtract money.

New Information
Students will learn prices of certain items in different cities.

Application
Students will be given a list of specific items that are needed in your every day life
(house, car, clothing, etc.). They will then pick a city in the United States. The students
will then research how much those items would be in those cities. With that information,
the students will create a poster listing how much each item would be and the total.
Students will then be given a list of the cities and they must list the cities in order that
they think would be the cheapest to the most expensive places to live. Each student will
present their city in front of the class stating how much every item would be.

Generalize/Wrap-Up
As a class, we will discuss what place would be the most expensive and cheapest. We
will also discuss why they think it would be that expensive/cheap to live in those places.
