EE 735: Microelectronics Simulations Lab: Circuits Assignment-1 (Due On 17th October)

This document outlines an assignment to design and simulate a differential amplifier circuit. The objective is to follow 6 steps: 1. Simulate an inverter and analyze input-output characteristics for different resistor values. 2. Plot transistor characteristics and extract parameters like threshold voltage and transconductance. 3. Use AC analysis to calculate small signal parameters and compare to extracted values. 4. Design a common-source amplifier with a gain of 5 meeting input/output voltage specs. 5. Apply sinusoidal inputs and measure transient gains to validate design. 6. Modify the amplifier for a differential configuration and calculate gains.

Objective can be achieved by following the steps given below:

1. DC Analysis : Design a NMOS inverter with width and length of transistor
5um and 200nm respectively. Plot input-output characteristics of the
inverter for RD of 1K, 2K, 5K and 10K. What do you infer from the
characteristics? [2 Marks]
2. Using DC analysis plot Id vs. Vg for a NMOS transistor of W = 5um and
L = 200nm for different Vd s of 0.3 V, 0.7 V, 0.9 V and 1.1 V. [2 Marks]
Estimate the Vt by extrapolating the linear region or the max gm
method using deriv command
Estimate (= n Cox ), small-signal transconductance (gm ) drainto-source resistance (rds ) of the transistor based on the known square
expression.
3. Using AC analysis (in-between 1 KHz and 1 MHz) calculate small signal
parameters (gm and rds ) of the transistor when Vg is 0.7 V and Vd is 0.9
V. Compare these values from the values calculated in above question(s).
[2 Marks]
4. Now design a common-source amplifier with minimum voltage gain of 5,
input DC voltage 0.7V and output DC voltage of 0.9V. Hint: You might
need to find an appropriate RD and W and L of the transistor. [2 Marks]

5. Now apply low frequency (something in-between 1K and 1 MHz) sinusoidal signal of amplitude 50mV on top of DC bias voltage (here it is 0.7
V) at the input. By transient analysis, measure the output amplitude
and calculate the gain. Repeat the same for input amplitudes of 100mV
and 200mV. Compare these gains with the gain estimated in the above
question. Comment if they are NOT same. [2 Marks]
6. Modify the above common-source amplifier, with source tied to 0.3V (
NOT to ground ) and with input DC voltage of 1 V (at the gate). Now
extend this design to a differential amplifier as shown in the Figure 1.
Calculate the gain through AC analysis and transient analysis. [2 Marks]
