Motion Position and Reference Point
What is Motion?
Motion is the change in
position over time.

2. Without pointing to,
describing, or naming the object,
give directions to a classmate
for finding it.
3. Ask your classmate to identify
the object using your directions.
Sowhat is POSITION?

of an object or place.

something is by comparing
it to your position or the
position of another object or
place.

Notes
1. What is a
A location
reference point? (object or
places
position) to
which you
compare other
locations (or
positions)
Example: A sidewalk
Non-example: A car at
stoplight
Example: A tree

Anticipation Questions!
Relative Motion
Relative motion is just a way of
saying that sometimes different
people will say different things about
the motion of the same object.
This is not because one of them is
wrong, but because they are using
different frames of reference.
Frame of Reference
Just as position is described by using
a reference point, motion is
described by using a frame of
reference.
Question
Notes
5. What is a
frame of
reference?
Frame of Reference
When you are standing on the
ground, that is your frame of
reference.
Anything that you see, watch, or
measure will be compared to the
reference point of the ground.
If I am standing in the back of a
moving truck, the truck is now my
frame of reference and everything
will be measured compared to it.
Example 1
If you are on the bus, the driver is
not changing his position compared
with the inside of the bus.
AKAhis position has not changed.
He is still in his seat!
Example 2
To the observer on the sidewalk, the
driver is changing position along with
the bus.
The street sign, is not changing
position. From this observers point of
view, the street sign is not moving,
but the driver is.
QUICK REVIEW:
REFERENCE POINT- a fixed
object/place that you use to describe
position
FRAME OF REFERENCE- location of
the observer who may or may not be
moving
