Mr. Martin/Mr.

Pattersons Class
Week of November 2-6
Parent/teacher conferences continue this week. We really would like to meet with every family.
If you have not set up a time, please do so.
On Tuesday morning our school will have an assembly about one of the Habits of Mind, Managing
Impulsivity.
On Thursday afternoon our school is being treated to a special performance by Matt Loosigian,
a musician.
Our school is collecting canned and boxed goods from now until Helping Hands on November 13.
Please send some items in if your family has any to spare.
In Second Step we are learning about empathy and that peoples feelings can change.
Math: We will begin our third module of the year, Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of
Numbers to 1,000. As you can tell by the title, understanding place value within 1,000 is the
main focus. Students will be learning how to bundle ones to make 10s, tens to make 100s, and
hundreds to make 1,000. Students will also learn how to use quickdraw to count within 1,000
using a method called draw, label, box and count.
Example:
47 > 81
Spelling: Long and short vowel review. Working on identifying long and short vowel sounds. At
home have your children identify long versus short vowel sounds.
Its bath time, what vowel sound do you hear in the word bath? What about the word time?
Reading: Book Club continues this week. Students are working on a variety of fluency,
comprehension, and decoding skills based on their needs.
Keep reading at least 20 minutes a night at home. This can be your child reading to themselves,
reading to a sibling, reading to a parent, or a sibling or parent reading to them.
Writing: Story writing. The students have been quite excited about their Work on Writing time
during our Daily5 literacy block. Some have written and illustrated books. Help stimulate their
imagination by brainstorming and asking questions about what theyre writing at school!
Science: During our first science unit we will be learning about famous inventors and
inventions. This week we will learn about what inventions are and why inventions are so
important. Well learn a few famous inventions as well.
Social Studies: None for now as we focus on Science.
Vocabulary: Building vocabulary can happen every single day. Use opportunities at home to
help build vocabulary. Were pulling vocabulary words from read aloud times, guided reading
books, independent reading books, library books, and from general discussion times.

The following homework assignments are

due by Friday, November 6:
Math: Complete Lesson 1Homework page
Reading: Read twenty minutes a night.
Spelling: Study your spelling words*.
*Each week I am sending home the choice of two spelling lists. I may be encouraging some to
choose one list over the other. Mastery of some of the word patterns in List A is very important for
both reading and writing. Students may be encouraged to choose List A to develop some of these
foundation skills.
