This document discusses the dangers of texting while driving. It notes that while texting is convenient, it is also a major distraction that takes a driver's attention away from the road for prolonged periods. Statistics are presented showing that distracted driving results in thousands of deaths each year. Specifically, texting makes a crash 23 times more likely and takes drivers' attention away from the road for at least 5 seconds at a time when going 55 mph. The document advocates for laws to curb this dangerous behavior and urges drivers to stop texting while driving.

TEXTING

AND
DRIVING
AND THE DANGER IT CAUSES

THE PROBLEM
Texting is convenient
Texting is easy and fast
Technology is improving
More people have cell phones
than ever

THE DISTRACTION
Texting takes drivers attention longer
and more frequent than other
distractions
People killed in crashes from distracted
driving
In 2011- 3,331 deaths
In 2010- 3,267 deaths

5 seconds is the minimal time someone

who texts can take their attention away
from the road. At 55 mph, this is the
length of a football field
Texting makes a crash up to 23 times
more likely

DISTANCE BETWEEN CRASHING COMPARED TO

AMOUNTS OF MESSAGES

TEENS
Teens who text while driving spend 10%
off their lane
According to AT&Ts teen driver survey,
97% agree its dangerous but 43% do it
anyway

THE AFTERMATH

A GOOD EXAMPLE?
48% of kids 12 to 17 have been in a car
while the driver was texting
27% of adults have texted while driving
15% of young drivers have seen their
parents text and drive

JUSTIFICATION?
Reading a text is safer than composing one.
I hold the phone near the windshield for better
visibility.
I increase my following distance.
I only text at a stop sign or red light.

WHAT WE SEE

THE LAW
Maine prohibits novice drivers
from cell phone use and all
drivers from text messaging

IN THE PAST
The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration reported that in 2012
driver distraction was the cause of 18% of
all fatal crashes with 3,328 people killed
and crashes resulting in an injury with
421,000 people wounded.

IT NEEDS
TO STOP
