Biography
Richard Georg Strauss was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras. He
was known for his operas. Strauss was born in Munich, Germany on June 11,1864 and was the first child
to Musician Franz Joseph Strauss and his spouse Josepha. Strauss began composing pieces of music at a
very young age of only six-years. Several years later, at the age of eighteen Strauss had already composed
140 works!
Richards father Franz found his way out of poverty with his incredible musical talents. Franz was a
member of the Munich Court Opera and was considered one of the best French horn players of his time!
Franz raised Richard with ethics of hard work, moderation, precise musical expertise and a love of the
classics.
In the Strauss family home, music was a way of life for everyone! At the age of four, Richard started taking
piano lessons and by the age of six he was already working on his first composition Schneider-Polka and
Weihnachtslied, his mother wrote the lyrics to the pieces as Strauss only new how to write notes.
In 1894, there was a turning point in his private life: Strauss married Soprano Pauline de Ahna.
Unfortunately, Strauss passed away due to a kidney failure on September 8, 1949 in Garmisch, Germany.

Facts
Richard Strauss heard his first Wagner operas, Lohengrin and Tannhuser, in 1874. At
first, his father banned him from studying Wagners music. It was not until the age of 16
that Richard was able to obtain a score of Tristan und Isolde. Wagner's music made a
heartfelt impact on his musical development.
Because of his father, Strauss became a great champion of the horn. His first Horn
Concerto showed the influence of Schumann and Mendelssohn and remains a staple of
the modern horn repertoire.
In the early 1930s, Strauss did not join the Nazi party. For reasons of expediency,
however, he initially cooperated with the early Nazi regime in the hope that it would
promote German art and culture. Much of Strauss's motivation in his conduct during the
Third Reich was, however, to protect his Jewish daughter-in-law and grandchildren from
persecution. Strauss used his considerable influence to prevent them from being sent to
concentration camps.
