- counting to and back from 20
- what are characteristics of number lines (can start from any number)
Introduce:
- what is addition? (the joining of two or more groups)
- discuss using examples in the class (If I had two girls and three boys,
when I join these two groups of children, I am adding them together to get a
total number)

Whole class focus: 10min


- Dominoes (draw replica on whiteboard, point out the two sections, add
them together, tell children this is the sum/total of the two amounts,
distribute dominoes, have children take turns to say the total of their
sections)
*Would this be different if it was 4+2 instead of 2+4?
- demonstrate on whiteboard what this would look like on number line?
- get the students to write on their own number lines different domino
additions that teacher provides
- Dice (roll three dice, what is the sum? how to represent on number line?
repeat and get the students to represent on their own number line)
Small group focus: 10-15min rotation
Activity One- Number line problems on floor
Pose worded problems and have the children suggest solutions and discuss
strategies. Write up number problem from this. Select child to represent on
the number line.
Repeat with different problems
Activity Two- Addition strategies booklet
Various activities that ask for different ways to represent addition (fingers,
unifix, number lines, ten frames, counters and pictures)
Activity Three- Dinosaur number line addition
Solve multiple addition sums using a number line.

Conclusion /Closure

Little confusing. The flow was a bit


disrupted by the counting to 20 after
you spoke about the adding on a
number line.

- Always make sure children dont have things to fiddle with on the floor. Craig and Jay both had fans.
- Answer from number line using the number line rather than to check for the answer.
- Always have extra for children to do even if you think they wont get to it.
