Building Construction Geodesic Domes

This document discusses geodesic domes, which are spherical or partial-spherical structures based on networks of great circles. They are lightweight, rigid structures that are quick to install and provide an all-weather shelter. A specific example, the Matrimandir in Auroville, India, is highlighted. It took over 30 years to construct and features over 1400 stainless steel discs in its space frame supporting the skin of the dome structure.

BUILDING

CONSTRUCTION
GEODESIC DOMES

INTRODUCTION

First designed by Buckminster Fuller.

Spherical or partial-sphericalshell structure.

Based on a network ofgreat circles(geodesics) on the

surface of asphere.

The geodesics intersect to formtriangularelements that

have local triangular rigidity and also distribute thestress
across the structure.

When completed to form a complete sphere, it is

ageodesic sphere.
