Free Fall Problems

This document contains 6 free fall problems involving objects being dropped, thrown upwards or downwards, or moving under the combined effects of gravity and an initial velocity. The problems calculate velocities, times, or displacements related to the falling or rising objects. Key details include a camera dropped from a balloon ascending at 5 m/s, a trampolinist leaving at 3 m/s, a cannonball fired upwards at 100 m/s, a rock thrown down at a tourist 40 m below, a sandwich thrown upwards and caught 10 m above the ground, and a rock tossed up at 15 m/s from 1 m above the ground.

Free Fall Problems:

1. A balloonist drops his camera from a height of 100 m while his balloon is ascending at
5 m/s. With what velocity will the camera impact the ground?
B) How long did it take to reach the ground?

2. A trampolinist leaves the surface of the trampoline moving upward at 3 m/s. What
will be her maximum displacement?

3. A cannonball is fired vertically upwards at 100 m/s. How long will it take to return to
the cannon?
b) What is its maximum displacement?

4. A rock is thrown downwards from the edge of the Grand Canyon. With what velocity
will it hit the donkey-riding tourist who is 40 m below?

5. A sandwich is thrown upwards by a street vendor to a person in the third floor window
of a building. If the vendor releases the sandwich from 2 m above the ground and the
third floor window is 10 m above the ground, at what velocity will the sandwich be
moving when it is caught?

6. A rock is tossed upwards at 15 m/s from a height of 1 m above the ground, what will
be its velocity when it is 6 m above the ground?
