Visualizing Fractions

This document outlines how students visualize and work with fractions in grades 1 and 2. In grade 1, students visualize and identify halves and quarters of wholes and sets. They divide objects into two or four equal groups. In grade 2, students visualize and identify unit fractions below 10/10 as well as compare and order them. They also work with similar fractions below 10/10. Common errors include seeing the numerator and denominator as separate rather than a single number, and thinking smaller denominators mean smaller fractions. Fractions can be taught as parts of wholes, sets, division, ratios, or numbers on a number line.

and number line)

relation symbols.
orders similar fractions

Some Common Errors

Students

think that the numerator and denominator

are separate values. It is hard for them to see that 1/4
is one number. (Use the number line to develop this
notion)
In thinking of the numbers separately, students may
think that 2/3 means any two parts, not equal-sized
parts.
Students think that a fraction such as 1/3 is smaller
than a fraction such as 1/4 because 3 is smaller than
4.

QUESTION
Do you think learning
fractions is difficult?
Why or why not?

1) Fraction as part of a whole

2) Fraction as part of a set of objects
3) Fraction as division
4) Fraction as a ratio
5) Fraction as a number on the number
line
