Zero-Input Responses

This document contains 6 questions about linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. The questions involve finding zero-input responses, characteristic polynomials, and unit impulse responses of different LTI systems specified by differential equations and initial conditions. Specifically, questions 1-3 ask the reader to find zero-input responses for different LTI systems based on given initial conditions. Questions 4 asks the reader to evaluate integrals related to impulse functions. Questions 5-6 ask the reader to find the unit impulse response for two different LTI systems specified by differential equations.

Tutorial Sheet 2 – Zero-input Responses

1.* A Linear Time Invariant (LTI) system is specified by system equation

( D 2 + 4 D + 4) y (t ) = Df (t )
a) Find the characteristic polynomial, characteristic equation, characteristic roots and characteristic modes of
this system.

b) Find y0 (t ) , the zero-input component of the response y(t) for t ≥ 0, if the initial conditions are y0 (0) = 3 ,
and y 0 (0) = −4.

2.* Repeat question one with

D( D + 1) y (t ) = ( D + 2) f (t )

And initial conditions of y0 (0) = 1 , and y 0 (0) = 1.

3.** Repeat question one with

( D 2 + 9) y (t ) = (3D + 2) f (t )

And initial conditions of y0 (0) = 0 , and y 0 (0) = 6.

4.* Evaluate the following integrals:

∞ ∞
a) ∫−∞
f (τ )δ (t − τ )dτ c) ∫
−∞
δ (t )e − jωt dt
∞ ∞
b) ∫−∞
δ (τ ) f (t − τ )dτ d) ∫
−∞
δ (t − 2) sin π t dt

5.** Find the unit impulse response of the LTI system specified by the equation

d2y dy dx
2
+ 4 + 3 y (t ) = + 5 x(t ) .
dt dt dt

6.*** Find the unit impulse response of the LTI system specified by the equation

( D + 1)( D 2 + 5 D + 6) y (t ) = (5D + 9) f (t ) .
