Course Overview
This course will prepare students to understand and respond to a variety of oral/media
presentations, develop and deliver a message, demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary,
incorporate reading strategies, organize information and increase reading proficiency,
demonstrate writing proficiency, and demonstrate an awareness and sensitivity to
diverse cultures. Students will understand that learning is an ACTIVE process. They will
participate in class discussions, and group work. Students will attempt not to simply
memorize but to learn and to understand material presented to them; they will
understand that education is vital to the rest of their lives.
Class Expectations
All students must be prepared for class and be ready to participate in class discussions.
They will be expected to remain on task and follow all procedures related to class
activities. This years technology component, I-Ready, will provide personalized student
instruction targeted to students unique areas of needs and to boost achievement in the
content area of Reading. Students will be required to complete a minimum of one hour
per week. Assignments, tests, projects, classroom activities, homework, and other
activities will be designed to allow your childs performance to indicate the level of
mastery of the designated objectives.
Parent Teacher Communication
The best way to reach me is via email [email protected] or visiting the schools
website, which has a link to my email. I will post important class information, such as
homework assignments, test/quiz review, project/research paper instructions and
sometimes review notes. Please check the website for information on the class,
important dates and if you are absent. Should you wish to schedule a conference please
call Ms. America in the main office so that she may coordinate a convenient date and
time. Also, I will be utilizing the application Class Dojo as an instant form of
communication. Each parent will have a personalized code to see the progress of their
child. This code is attached to the syllabi. Please assure you have the application
downloaded to obtain instant notifications. In addition, the class agenda will be updated
and used as a progress monitoring tool for academics and behavior every Thursday and
Friday. Each student will be required to bring the agenda to class daily, and will be held
accountable for obtaining his/her parents signature on a weekly basis as to ensure a
successful year.
Class Materials

Grading Scale/Policy
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 0-59
I = Incomplete
Z = Did not complete the assignment
X = Excused from assignment
Make-Up/Late Work
Upon returning to school after an excused absence, a student has the responsibility
within the number of days equal to the length of the absence or suspension to meet with
the teacher and develop a plan for making up missed work, quizzes, and examinations.
No make-up work will be accepted after the date agreed upon between the student and
the teacher. This agreement will be noted in the communication agenda. Unless the
absence is excused, there will be NO late work accepted. In order to receive credit for
any missed assignments, students must have an excusable absence, tardy, or early
dismissal. It is the students responsibility to check with the teacher regarding any
late/missed assignments and their due date.
Grade Breakdown for Class
Tests: 30%
Quizzes: 20%
Classwork/Participation: 20% (includes notebook checks at the end of every quarter)
Projects: 15%
Homework: 15% (1 hour of i-Ready per week checked every Monday)

Cheating will not be tolerated and will result in an immediate F
