Robert Imani Starks - Master Instructor ALL - CITY KARATE STUDIO SHOTOKAN KARATE-DO GOALS Our program objectives are to aid students in obtaining concentration, self-discipline and self-confidence. In this program we hope to promote good health and long life. All students will be encouraged to work cooperatively with instructors and fellow students to meet the stated objectives. Over the next several classes, we will study a variety of techniques. In the beginning we will concentrate only on those techniques that are simple to learn, flexible enough to allow the student to use them in a variety of situations and most importantly highly effective. DOJO KUN ( philosophy ) In our practice of Karate-do, may we develop patience, sincerity, honesty, courage, humility, brotherhood/sisterhood, and wisdom. DOJO ETIQUETTE Students should observe the training schedule. Try not to be late. Always address an instructor as Sensei. ‘When entering or leaving the dojo, bow respectfully toward the front. Always be polite to your instructors, senior students and elders. Be aware of your physical condition. Remove all personal jewelry such as rings, watches, chains, etc. before practice since they can cause injury to yourself or others. 7. When training begins, no one is allowed to leave the training floor without the instructor’s permission. 8. Donot eat just before coming to practice. a PP How TO TIE MY BELT KARATE PARENTS Parents play a key role in how a child will progress and how their attitude develops as a martial artist. We, as instructors, know this very-well because we are parents as well, and have gone through this with our children. The martial arts can be very rewarding to a child and their parents in many ways. Self confidence, attitude, and physical and mental conditioning can help children in ‘a way that no other system can. Needless to say, we are very proud of each and every student because they all have their own unique qualities and their own special ways. This is a guideline for the karate parents. 4. Keeping your child's interest in the martial arts: Itis important to encourage your child to participate in the arts and to reward them. It's also important not to push them too hard because they will ook at arate more as a job than as an adventure. Let them practice at their own pace and encourage them while they practice, 2. Recognizing your child's limits: Itis important to remember that some children's physical capabilities are more advanced than others. Don't give up if your child is not as advanced as others, in time they will bloom. All children have certain talents. Is up to us as instructors to recognize these talents and aid the children in their development. 3. Parents’ responsibilities in the classroom: As instructors, we appreciate the parents’ concern about their children in the classroom. Once the class begins, itis important that we are not interrupted while teaching. This disrupts the class and takes away from class time. If you have any questions, please wait until after class. We will be glad to help in any way. 4, Feel free to call: ‘We are always ready to talk to parents if there is a problem with their child. Whether it is home, ‘school, financial, physical, mental, medication, or just as a concemed parent. Please feel free to call. ALL - CITY KARATE STUDIO SHOTOKAN KARATE-DO HISTORY OF KARATE According to legend, the evolution of Karate began over a thousand years ago, possibly as early as the ‘s" century B. C. when Bodhidharma, a Buddhist Monk arrived in Shaolin-si, China from India and taught Zen Buddhism. He also introduced a set of exercises designed to strengthen the mind and body. Bodhidharma’s teachings later became the basis for the majority of Chinese martial arts. In ‘ruth, the origins of Karate appear to be somewhat obscure and little is known about the early development of Karate until it appeared in Okinawa. Sometime between the years 1784 and 1903, the term karate replaced that of Te. This new name reflected the synthesis of the native Okinawan martial arts of Te with the influence of the Chinese Martial Arts the Okinawans had been exposed to. KARATE-DO Karate-do was modified and transformed into a way of life by Master Ginchin Funakoshi in 1905. Before this, it was just a group of techniques that permitted self-defense without weapons. Weapons bans, imposed on the Okinawans at various points throughout their history encouraged the refinement of empty-hand techniques and, for this reason, was trained in secret until modem times. Further refinement came with the influence of other martial arts brought by nobles and trade merchants to the island. Born in 1868, Funakoshi began to study karate at the age of 11, and was a student of the greatest masters of the time, Yasutsune Itosu and Yasutusune Azato. The first public demonstration of karate in Japan was in 1917 by Funakoshi, at the Butoku-den in Kyoto. This, and subsequent demonstrations, greatly impressed many Japanese, including, the Crown- Prince Hirohito, who was very enthusiastic about the Okinawan art. In 1922, having mastered two major styles of Karate, Funakoshi, then President of the Okinawa association of the Spirit of Martial Arts, was chosen to demonstrate Karate at the first National Athletic Exhibition in Tokyo. This led to the introduction of the ancient martial art to the rest of Japan. Other masters then helped spread Karate throughout the country and the rest of the world. A general Federation of Karate Organizations was established in 1964 after Karate achieved a following abroad. ‘This federation’s main concern has been to establish unified forms, rankings, and rules of competition. A strong foundation helps develop a variety of strong offensive and defensive strikes. Some karate stances also act as excellent legs strengthening exercises. Although perfect Dachi form is stressed in training, this may not always be the case in self-defense or sparring situations. In training, try not to favor ‘one stance. This can be dangerous because you cannot use your favorite stance at all times. A good student is versatile, able to adopt a variety of stances to any situation. Although there are as many as 14 different stances, the following are the most practical and most commonly used in our school: 1 HEISOKU DACHI NORMAL STANCE 2. KIBADACHI HORSE STANCE 3. You have to have a well-placed or developed block in order to stop your attackers initial move. You may not get a second chance. Spend many hours perfecting different blocking techniques. Besides being a defensive move, blocks are also offensive weapons. A well-developed block to a major joint such as a the knee, ankle, or elbow can disable an attacker as effectively as a punch or a kick. To minimize injury when blocking with the arm, karate stresses making contact with the forearm muscle, not the bone. Listed below are some of the blocking techniques we will be concentrating on: HARD BLOCKS are powerful, straight line strikes that meet the attackers strike full force. SOFT BLOCKS are open hand, circular movements that deflect the attackers strike. 1, GEDAN BARAI DOWNWARD BLOCK 2. UCHI UKE INSIDE BLOCK 3. SOTO UKE OUTSIDE BLOCK 4, JODAN UKE UPWARD BLOCK 5. JUJT UKE X BLOCK ALL - CITY KARATE STUDIO SHOTOKAN KARATE-DO GERI__-__KICKS Kicks are generally more difficult to master than hand techniques because of the loss of stability from balancing on one leg. Therefore, a great deal of effort must be put into perfecting them. The basic and the advanced kicks in karate are very effective. One great advantage karate has over all other self-defense arts is the use of the legs. A kick has over five times the power of a punch, making it an excellent weapon to possess. Before you begin kicking, you must first master the five different positions used when striking. BLADI KNEE: The position of your foot when executing kicks. ‘The knee is for aiming kicks to certain levels. The top of the knee can also be used for striking. When striking with the knee tuck the leg in and keep the toes pointed. ‘The instep is the top of your foot, when striking is executed by pointing your tocs. You make contact with the instep when executing a roundhouse kick. ‘You strike with the heel by pushing your foot straight up and curling your toes back, as if trying to touch your toes with your shin. You make contact with the heel of your foot when executing a sidekick, back kick, crescent kick, front kick and all stomping techniques. BALL: ‘The ball is the part of the foot located under the big toe, which is executed by spreading and pulling your toes toward your body. The ball is used to make contact when executing a front snap kick. 1. MAWASHI GERI ROUNDHOUSE KICK 2. YOKO GERI SIDE KICK 3. USHIRO GERI BACK KICK 4, TEISOKU GERI CRESENT KICK, 5. The early Grand Masters of the art developed special techniques incorporated in Katas for self-defense and many were used in life or death encounters. Over the years, Katas have been refined to show the power of karate and exemplify the beauty and grace that makes it a highly respected art form. Kata can be compared to a gymnastic floor exercise. Like a gymnast, the practitioner must demonstrate in their performance the same exceptional balance, speed, power, grace, rhythm, timing and spirit. Kata distinguishes one traditional karate style from another by showing the dominant techniques unique to that system. KATA S ARE JUDGED ON THE FOLLOWING POINT: 1. APPEARANCE 6. KIAI 1. STAMINA 2.
