MRAB Means To Have Multiple Radio Access Bearers

MRAB, or Multiple Radio Access Bearers, allows a UE to have multiple simultaneous connections to the core network. A Radio Access Bearer is a connection between the UE and core network that carries user data, and can consist of a Traffic Radio Bearer between the UE and RNC plus an Iu Traffic Bearer between the RNC and core. MRAB enables a UE to have both a CS RAB for voice and a PS RAB for data, or multiple RABs of different types, allowing activities like a voice call and web browsing simultaneously using different RABs.

MRAB means to have Multiple Radio Access Bearers.

To understand MRAB, we have to understand the technical term such as Bearer, Radio Bearer,
Radio Access Bearer.
RRC :- Only 1 RRC connection at max can occur between UE and RNC.
RB: Radio Bearer. Bearer is like a pipeline connecting 2 nodes so that information (voice/data)
can flow through.
There are 2 types of Radio Bearers. Namely SRB and TRB
SRB: Signaling Radio Bearer. It is a logical connection that exists between UE and RNC. It is
used to carry control plane signaling messages
TRB: Traffic Radio Bearer. It is a logical connection that exists between UE and RNC. It is used
to carry user plane data. It is also called as Radio Bearer
Iu Bearer: It is a Bearer between RNC and Core Network (SGSN). They are also of 2 types. Iu
Signaling Bearer and Iu Traffic Bearer.
The combination of Radio Bearer (TRB) and the Iu Traffic Bearer is called Radio Access Bearer.
RAB: Is a connection between UE and Core Network. It is used to carry user data between UE
and CN.
One RAB can carry either CS Voice or PS Data.
Multiple RAB can carry
1CS + 1 PS , 2CS, 2PS, 2CS+ 1PS etc combinations

Little addition to the notes above.

RAB can be either CS or PS.
There are 4 classes of traffic that can flow in a RAB. Namely, Conversational, Streaming,
Interactive and Background.
Conversational and Streaming belong to the CS RAB. Interactive and Background belong to the
PS Class.
For CS RAB, dedicated resources are needed between UE and CN. For PS RAB, dedicated
resources are not needed. Because, the CS RAB are intended to carry real-time traffic such as
Audio, Video telephony and PS RAB are intended to carry non-real time traffic such as WWW,
Email, FTP.
RAB assignment Request is always sent by the Core network NOT the UE.
Examples of CS RAB: CS 12.2 Kbps, CS 64 Kbps (12.2 and 64 are Peak data rates)
Examples of PS RAB: PS 64 Kbps, PS 128 Kbps, PS 384 Kbps ( 64, 128 and 384 are Peak data
rates).
From the User perspective, when a user is using an SVLTE Phone. He can make a voice call on
1x and do web browsing on 4G simultaneously. This means there are TWO RAB's between UE
and Core Network. The first RAB is the CS Conversational RAB. The second RAB is the PS
Interactive RAB. This is called MRAB.
