AfterstartingAutoCAD2007youfaceapage,whichisyourdesignworkspace.Itcontainstheelements
thatyouwillusetocreateyourdesigns&receiveinformationaboutthem.Thefollowingillustration
showsthemainpartsoftheAutoCAD2007window.

1. TitleBar
PlacedatthetopofthewindowthisshowsthenameoftheprogramAutoCAD2004.Thename
ofthecurrentdrawing(orDrawing1.dwg,ifthecurrentdrawinghasnotbeensaved)appearsin
theTitleBarofthedrawingareaordocumentwindow.Ifthedrawingwindowhasbeen
maximized,thenameofthedrawingappearsinthemainTitleBar.

2.MenuBar
LocatedbelowtheTitleBar,itcontainsthedefaultAutoCADmenus.Menusaredefinedby
menufilesthatyoucanmodifyordesignonyourown.

3.Toolbars
AnumberoftoolbarsappearonthescreenbelowtheInlineBar.Commandscanbeactivated
byclickingthebuttonsonthevariousToolbars.AppearanceofvariousToolbarsisoptionalandtheir
positioncanbeshifted.ThemostcommonToolbarsthatappearbydefaultincludethefollowing:

a.StandardToolbars
Containsfrequentlyusedbuttons,suchasRedo,Undo,ZoomaswellasMicrosoft
OfficestandardButtonssuchasOpen,Save,Cut,Copy,andPasteetc.

b.ObjectPropertiesToolbars
Itcontainstwotoolbars.OneisLayerstoolbarandanotherisPropertiestoolbar.It
createsnewlayersandmanageslayers.Setsobjectpropertiessuchascolor,linetypeand
lineweight.

c.DrawandModifyToolbars
Provideaccesstocommondrawandmodifycommands.ThedrawandModify
toolbarsaredisplayedwhenyoustartAutoCAD.Thesetoolbarsaredockedontheleftand
rightsideofthewindow.Youcaneasilymovetoolbarsandturnthemonandoff.

4.DrawingArea
Displaysdrawings.Thedrawingareasizevaries,dependingonthesizeoftheAutoCADwindow
andonthenumberotherelements(suchastoolbarsanddialogboxes)thataredisplayed.Thiscontains
thefollowingmainfeatures:

a.CrosshairsorCursor
Identifiespickanddrawingpointswithinthedrawingarea.Usethe
crosshairs/coursor,whicharecontrolledbyyourpointingdevice,tolocatepointsand
selectanddrawobjects.

b.UserCoordinateSystem(UCS)icon
Showstheorientationofthedrawing.AutoCADdrawingsaresuperimposedonan
invisiblegrid,orcoordinatesystem.CoordinatesystemsarebasedonX,YandZ(or3D)

coordinates.AutoCADhasaFixedworldcoordinatesystem(WCS)andamovableuser
coordinatesystem(UCS).TohelpyouvisualizeUCSlocationandorientation,aUCSiconis
displayedinthelowerleftcornerofthedrawingarea.

c.ModelTabandLayoutTabs
Switchyourdrawingbetweenmodel(drawing)spaceandpaper(layout)space.
Yougenerallycreateyourdrawingsinmodelspaceandthencreatelayoutstoplotand
printyourdrawinginpaperspaces.

5.CommandWindow
Displayspromptsandmessages.InAutoCAD,youstartcommandsinoneofthreeways:

Chooseanitemformatmenuorashortcutmenu,
Clickabuttononatoolbar,
Enterthecommandonthecommandline.

However,evenifyouchoosecommandsfrommenusandtoolbars,AutoCADmaydisplaycommand
promptsandthecommandhistory(pressF2buttononkeyboard)inacommandwindow.

6.StatusBar
Displaysthecursorcoordinatesinthelowerleftcorner.Thestatusbaralsocontainsbuttons
thatyoucanusetoturnoncommondrawingaids.Theseinclude:
SNAP(snapmodeF9)

GRID(drawinggridF7)

ORTHO(orthomodeF8)

POLAR(polartrackingF10)

OSNAP(objectsnapsF3)

OTRACK(objectsnapstrackingF11)

LWT(lineweightdisplay)

MODEL(model/paperspacetoggle)
