Dear Families,
Welcome to fifth grade! Since last Tuesday, weve been busy building our classroom community and learning
the routines of our academic day. Ive enjoyed getting to know your children over the past week, and I am already
impressed by their interest in learning. This is my fourth year at Sycamore Creek, and I love being part of the Croc
family! Below are some highlights from our discussion at Open House:
Please help to ensure your child arrives to school on time, rested and ready to learn! 5th graders are expected to
come to school each day prepared and ready to work hard. We encourage all students to be in the classroom by 8:15
so they have time to unpack, ask homework questions, and get a head start on assignments.
Have a Friday Folder Conference with your child as often as possible. I encourage all parents to make a routine
out of reviewing Friday Folders together with their 5th grader. Interim reports and report cards are sent every fourfive weeks, but reviewing returned graded papers keeps you up-to-date on a weekly basis! Conduct sheets are also
included in Friday Folders, and are the best way to keep up with your childs in-class behavior and work habit trends.
Pay attention to RED STARS on returned papers. The official Shank symbol for Please Sign and Return This Paper is
a large red star at the top of a page. Slip these back in the Friday Folders for me to collect after signing them.
Pay attention to MINI STARS on returned papers. Mistakes are opportunities for learning! I want students to seize
them . If there is a SMALL STAR next to a problem number, it means Id like for the student to make corrections (on
that particular problem). Corrections must be done on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the original
assignment. This helps me to distinguish between original and corrected work. Students should return corrected
quizzes within 3 days.
Parent-teacher communication: I communicate with parents most frequently through e-mail, but you are more than
welcome to request an in-person or phone conference at any time. We also have a class website,
www.shankstudents.weebly.com, which offers homework tips, links to learning websites, and more! Remind texts
this year for quick updates. Make sure youre signed up!
Staying nourished and hydrated. Our lunchtime (or, brunchtime ) runs from 10:55 A.M. 11:20 A.M. Of course,
you are always welcome to join our class in the cafeteria for lunch. Just remember to stop by the front office for a
visitors pass! Students are also welcome to bring snacks from home, and will be allowed to eat them during our class
read-aloud or at dismissal. We encourage water bottles! They can be kept on desks in the classroom, so long as they
do not become a distraction.
Celebrating birthdays: If you would like to have a special snack for your childs birthday, you are more than welcome
to bring it in! Make sure to contact me a few days in advance if you plan to come. Birthday treats should be passed
out in the cafeteria during our scheduled lunchtime. Dont forget that all treats must be store bought!
I am so excited to get to know and work with 26 new, wonderful families. Always feel free to contact me with any
concerns via e-mail or phone. Looking forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shank
