Welded Beam Calculation

The document calculates the size of welds required to connect the web and flange of welded steel beam sections based on the critical forces they will resist. It provides material properties and dimensions for a sample Beam A, then calculates the maximum moment and resulting horizontal shear force in the top flange. Using these values and the material strengths, it determines that 6mm continuous fillet welds on both sides of the beam are sufficient and meet the minimum strength required.

Introduction

The aim of this calculation is to calculate the size of the weld required to connect the web to the flange for welded
section as delivered on site. The calculations will be based on the most critical forces to be resisted by sections.
Values wil be extracted from calculation previously submitted to the consultant for approval.

Calculated Shear
distance between centroid of top flange with centroid of girder
Moment of inertia of girder about x-x axis

From analysis carried out, section will have to resist a maximum moment of 306kNm
Refer to Member 26, combination 4, at a distance of 1.4m from centre of support (taking into account haunch)

Calculating horizontal shear force in top flange:

stress in top flange =
= (306*1000000*220)/(195320000)
344.67

N/mm2

Area of top flange = (147x10) = 1470mm

Stress below py

Force in top flange = 345x1470x10-3 = 508 kN

Applied Horizontal shear on two fillet welds
= 508 147 10 220 = 0.420

kN/mm

2 19532 10
Using E35 electrode as mentioned above.
On both sides, 6mm fillet provided continuous welds, strength 0.92 kN/mm. This is the minimum size
weld to be used.
Longitudinal Capacity of weld provided > Hence Applied Horizontal Shear (WELDED BEAM OK)
