Polygonlesson

1) This lesson plan is for an 8th grade geometry class and focuses on teaching students about polygons. 2) Students will use manipulatives like pattern blocks and Cuisenaire rods to explore the sum of interior angles in polygons and the measure of interior angles in regular polygons. 3) The lesson will conclude with an assessment Kahoot quiz to review content before a quiz the next day.

Lesson Title: Geometry Concepts Unit, Lesson #4: Polygons

Author: Emily Droge Grade: 8

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
In the study of polygons, students will explore the sum of the angle measures
of a polygon and the measure of one interior angle of a regular polygon and
demonstrate their knowledge by participating in a Kahoot quiz.
CURRICULUM CONNECTION:
In the previous lesson, the students found interior angle measures of
triangles. In todays lesson, students will build on that knowledge because
they can use the interior sum of angles in triangle to find the interior sum of
angles in polygons.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.G.A.1.B
Angles are taken to angles of the same measure.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.G.A.5
Use informal arguments to establish facts about the angle sum and exterior
angle of triangles, about the angles created when parallel lines are cut by a
transversal, and the angle-angle criterion for similarity of triangles. For
example, arrange three copies of the same triangle so that the sum of the
three angles appears to form a line, and give an argument in terms of
transversals why this is so.
KNOWLEDGE OF STUDENTS:
Students will have multiple manipulative to use in guided them through this
lesson successfully. During our study on functions, the students were
introduced to Kahoot. This was used as an instructional strategy for
understanding linear equations. They loved playing Kahoot! They were highly
motivated to do their best because of the competition atmosphere it created.
They were focused and answered more problems accurately than they did on
their homework with similar questions. The Kahoot strategy was very
successful in understanding applying certain algebraic concepts. I will use
Cuisenaire rods and pattern blocks as a hands-on learning experience. This
will help the students tremendously with connecting concepts and learning
congruent and missing angle measures in various shapes.
ASSESSMENT:
Selected Response- Kahoot quiz: students will participate in a Kahoot quiz
based on todays content and prior lessons content to repair for tomorrows
quiz on lessons 1-4
Personal Communication- Students will teach the class on concepts from
todays lesson.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:
Kahoot quiz/game: Students will play a Kahoot game for assessment
and review for tomorrows quiz: Using their laptops, have students log
into Kahoot game using pin code. After everyone has logged in, start

game for accuracy and time. During the game, I will respond to
misconceptions and discuss key concepts that will be found on
tomorrows quiz.
Hands-on discovery: Students will use pattern blocks to show how
various polygons are formed by triangles. The students will record their
findings.
Visual aid: Map of the United States to identify the qualities of a
polygon. Have students decide and record which states are in the
shape of a polygon-Discuss.

LESSON PROCEDURE (50 minutes):

Access Prior Knowledge
Review from lesson #1 (5 minutes)- Students will recall and discuss
what a line segment looks like based on the activity with parallel lines
from lesson #1. This prior knowledge of a straight-line segment is
crucial for understanding in todays lesson on polygons.
New Information
1. Write essential question of the day on board: How can I find the
sum of the interior angle measures of a polygon? Discuss the
qualifications on a polygon and a regular polygon. Discuss the terms
equilateral and equiangular. Using Apply TV display the map the United
States on the whiteboard and hand out maps to students. Have
students decide and record which states are in the shape of a polygonDiscuss. (15 minutes)
2. Hands-on activity: Use pattern blocks to show how various polygons
are formed by triangles. The students will record their findings. Then I
will model to the students how we can find interior angle
measurements of a polygon based on the amount of triangles that are
inside various polygons. The sum of the exterior angles formed by any
polygon will always equal 360 degrees. We can also use 2-step
equations to solve for missing angle measures. Individual practice:

3. Plat Kahoot game for assessment and review for tomorrows quiz:
Using their laptops, have students log into Kahoot game using pin
code. After everyone has logged in, start game for accuracy and time.
During the game, I will respond to misconceptions and discuss key
concepts that will be found on tomorrows quiz. (10 minutes)
MATERIALS, EQUIPMENT:
Laptops; Apple TV-Display of United States Map; Handout of map; Pattern
Blocks
REFLECTIONS:
During my first period, I learned that I dont need to over-crowd a lesson
with too many instructional strategies. It is always better to have quality
strategies than quantity. During the first lesson, I spent too much time on
using the map and talking about regular v. irregular polygons. The graphic
organizer was enough in period 2 to keep the students interested and
engaged in the lesson. That is why I cut out the map section of the lesson for
period 2. At the end of the lesson for period 1, I ran out of time to best

explain how to study for the quiz and which materials to use. This was a lot
smoother for period 2, and cutting out the map portion at the beginning of
the lesson allowed for more time to discuss tomorrows quiz.
The students were engaged during the graphic organizer, but I should have
made the boxes bigger for some students to have more room to trace their
polygons. They were given the choice to trace the polygons from the pattern
blocks or sketch a figure on their papers. They were also able to move at
their own pace and ask questions for discussion through the process.
