Complex waveforms:
-Are the wave forms that comprise by a
fundamental component and number of
harmonics.
-The fundamental can be called the first
harmonic then followed my number of
harmonics , each harmonic has a different
amplitude and frequency .
-The 2nd harmonic will have the double
frequency of the fundamental and then the 3rd
so on .

-The Shape of the fundamental and


the 2nd harmonic waveforms:

First harmonic
(fundamental).

Second
harmonic.

Fundamental
+ the second
harmonic.

Sources of harmonics:
Switched-mode power supply:its an electronic device power supply that
incorrupt switching regulator to convert
electric power efficiently.

Dimmers:dimmers are devices used to vary the


brightness of a light by decreasing the voltage
and hence the mean power to the lamp.

Current regulator:a circuit that provide a constant current


output.

Frequency converter :is an electronic device that convert current


frequency to another current with the other
frequency.

Limitation of harmonics in electronic and


electrical system: The effect of harmonics on circuits is similar to
the effect of the stress and high blood
pressure on the human body
It can effect as shutting down of an important
plant system.

-It can case: Conductor over heating..

Capacitor heat rise.


It can total damage the capacitor.

It can also over load the transformer with


overheating on it that will case losses in the
efficiency.

For the Generator:


will be the same as the transformer with
losses in the generated values..

Methods used to eliminate or reduce


the harmonics:
Harmonic trap filters:
used to eliminate the harmonic current
it provide distortion of the power factor
correction, it tuned on specific harmonics to
eliminate.

Isolation transformer:it provides good solution by stepping the


voltage system up and down providing neutral
ground reference for nuisance ground faults.
