Foil Method

The FOIL method is a process used in algebra to multiply two binomials. It involves multiplying the First, Outer, Inner, and Last terms of each binomial being multiplied. For example, to multiply (3+7x)(6+2x), the first terms (3)(6) are multiplied first for 18. Then the outer terms (3)(2x) for 6x, followed by the inner terms (7x)(6) for 42x. Finally, the last terms (7x)(2x) are multiplied for 14x^2. The results are combined like terms to get the final product of 18 + 48x + 14x^2.

WHAT IS THE FOIL METHOD?

FOIL Method is a process used

in Algebra to multiply two
binomials.

A BRIEF REVIEW

Distributive Property explained how

to multiply a monomial (single
term) with a binomial such as
7(4+9x)

FOIL METHOD IS USED

When there is a binomial being

multiplied by another binomial.
(3+7x)(6+2x)

FOIL STANDS FOR

First Multiply the first term in each set
of parentheses.
Outer Multiply the outer term in each
set of parenthesis.
Inner Multiply the inner term in each
set of parentheses.
Last Multiply the last term in each set
of parentheses.

NOW LETS GIVE IT A TRY

First
Multiple the first term in the parenthesis
(3+7x)(6+2x)
3 X 6 = 18

Outer
Multiply the outer terms in the parenthesis
(3+7x)(6+2x)
(3)(2x) = 6x
18 + 6X

Inner
Multiply the inner terms in the parenthesis
(3+7x)(6+2x)
(7x)(6) = 42x
18 + 6x + 42x

Last
Multiply the last term in the parenthesis
(3+7x)(6+2x)
(7x)(2x) = 14x
18 + 6x + 42x + 14x

COMBINE LIKE TERMS

The last thing we do with this problem is
combine like terms.
18 +6x + 42x +14x becomes
18 + 48x + 14x
