Machine Tool: Gear Drive System

The document discusses six methods for changing speeds in gear drive systems: 1) Slip Gears where mating gear pairs are interchanged, 2) Sliding Key Method where one set of constantly meshing gears is engaged by a sliding key, 3) Tumbler Gears where multiple gears on one shaft engage an output shaft, 4) Sliding Type Cluster Gears where a cluster of gears slides to engage another set, 5) Jaw Clutches where clutches are engaged and disengaged with levers, and 6) Friction Clutches.

Gear Drive System

Method of changing speeds in all-gear
drive
1.Slip Gears
2.Sliding Key Method
3.Tumbler Gears
4.Sliding Type Cluster Gears
5.Jaw Clutches
6.Friction Clutches

Slip Gears
The mating gear pair on two adjacent shafts are
interchanged or replaced by another pair of gears. If all the
gears have the same module, the condition for
interchangeabilityT1 + T2 = T3 + T4 = T5 + T6 etc.

Sliding Key Method

Two sets of gears on two shafts are constantly in
mesh. One set is free to rotate on the shaft. Only
one gear of the free set is engaged by a sliding key.

Tumbler Gears
A number of gears is placed on one shaft, which is at
a fixed distance from the output shaft. Usually used
for feed drives and known as Norton Gearbox.

Sliding Type Cluster Gears

A set of cluster gears is moved along a shaft to
engage another set of gears (one gear of the
cluster is engaged at a time).

Jaw Clutches
Speed
can
be
changed by engaging
and
disengaging
clutches with levers.
