Oobleck

This lesson plan introduces second grade students to the concept of matter by having them listen to the story Bartholomew and the Oobleck. Students will then create and experiment with oobleck, a non-Newtonian fluid made of cornstarch and water. They will observe its properties, determine if it is a solid or liquid, and draw conclusions. The lesson incorporates science, English language arts, and math standards and takes approximately two hours.

Oobleck Lesson Plan

Title: investigating matter with a substance

Subject: science, ELA, math
Grade: second grade
Summary: in this lesson students will listen to the story Bartholomew and the Oobleck
and then create a science experiment corresponding to the text
Title: Ooey Gooey Oobleck
Standards:2-PSI-1: plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different
materials by their observable properties
2-PSI-2: analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine if
the properties are best suited for the purpose
Objectives: students will be able to determine the state of matter of the oobleck
Students will be able to make observations
Students will be able to create oobleck
Students will be able to draw conclusions
Vocabulary: solid, liquid, water, gas, matter
Time: approximately 2 hours
Materials: book, bowl, corn starch, water, food coloring, aprons, gloves, beaker,
measuring cup
Procedure:
ENGAGEMENT: (anticipatory set): teacher will introduce the book to the students and
will ask students to make predictions based on the cover of the book
EXPLORATION:

teacher will demonstrate the process of creating the oobleck so students can
explore the various states of matter hands on, by pouring measuring, mixing

Big idea questions: is it a solid? Is it a liquid? Does it bounce?

EXPLANATION:
students will be able to explain the following questions:

Why do you think the oobleck turns to liquid when you hold it in your
hand?

What do you think it would feel like if you poked it?

Do you think it would freeze if you put it in the freezer?

ELABORATION:

students will add more cornstarch and/or water to make further observations.
Teacher will facilitate a discussion for students to hypothesize the reasoning
behind the way it is.

EVALUATION:

students will demonstrate tht they have achieved the lesson objective by
completing a provided worksheet. The worksheet asks questions intended to be
completed prior to the experiment.
