Cell Phone Project

1) The document presents three cell phone plans - Plan A with a flat $40 monthly rate and unlimited minutes, Plan B with a per minute rate of $0.05, and Plan C with a flat $22 monthly rate and $0.01 per minute. 2) It provides information on three customers' monthly phone usage - Silent Sam talks for 2 hours, Chatty Cathy for 50 hours, and Mathy Mary for 15 hours. 3) The task is to determine the best plan for each customer by developing equations for the plans, graphing them, and calculating costs based on customers' usage.

Choosing a Cell Phone Plan

Choosing a cell phone plan isnt easy! Each company offers
numerous plans to accommodate for the variety of customers that
may walk through the door. Your job is to help three characters make
smart decisions and pick the cell phone plans that are most
appropriate for their behaviors. (Hint: This will require math!!!)
The Tick Talk Telephone Company offers these plans:
a. Plan A: a flat rate of $40 per month, unlimited calling
b. Plan B: a rate of 5 cents per minute
c. Plan C: a flat rate of $22 and one cent per minute

Three customers need to choose a plan:

a. Silent Sam: talks on the phone for about 2 hours in a month
b. Chatty Cathy: talks on the phone for about 50 hours in a
month
c. Mathy Mary: talks on the phone for about 15 hours in a month

Your assignment is to:

1. Figure out the best plan for each customer.
2. Find the range of minutes that would make each plan the
cheapest one.
*Follow the guided questions below to complete this task!*

unit of the independent variable?

2. What is the dependent variable in this scenario? What is the unit

of the dependent variable?

3. What does it mean to be a flat rate? How might this be

represented in an equation?

4. What does it mean to be an amount of money per minute? How

Questions Based on Equations

Which plan has the steepest slope?

Which has the greatest y-intercept?

What might this tell you about the cell phone plans? (Hint: Think
about if someone did not use any minutes during the month,
which might be the cheapest?)

Graphing Your Equation

Use the additional sheet provided to graph these equations. Be sure
to label your x- and y-axis, as well as the scale that you use. In order
to show the difference between the three plans, color:
Plan A: red
Plan B: blue
Plan C: green
