Food Item Description: Marshmallo W Peanut / Walnut Other Sample

The purpose of this lab was to measure the caloric content of foods by burning samples and measuring the temperature change of surrounding water. A peanut was found to contain the most energy per gram at 3,836.7 J. Experimental results matched published values. Calorimetry uses chemical reactions, with the products dispersing into the air. Calculations using temperature changes allowed determining the energy released and caloric content of a cashew nut sample.

Experiment 7: Caloric Content of Food

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to develop an idea of how to
measure the caloric content of foods learning units such as calories
and joules.
Procedure: I gathered my material and started by weighing my beaker.
Then I filled the beaker with 50mL of water and weighed it again. Then
I recorded the weights of the beaker and the water. Then I placed the
burner stand over the aluminum foil and put the beaker of water on top
of the burner stand and took the temp.
Data Tables and Observations:
Post-Lab Questions:
A. Which of the foods tested contains the most energy per gram?
Peanut with 3,836.7 J

B. How do your experimental results compare to published values?

My results dont seem off, more or less the same.
C. What type of reaction is used in calorimetry?
In calorimetry, chemical reaction is used.
D. What are the products of the reactions?
The products of the reactions consist of gas.
E. Where did the products go?
The products disperse into the air.
F.
A student performing an experiment to determine the caloric
content of a cashew nut collected the following data:

Mass of cashew nut before burning: 0.55 g

After burning: 0.05 g

Temp. increase of 200 g of water: 7.0 oC

1. Calculate the total energy released by the combustion of the

cashew nut by using the water temp. increase, the mass of the water
and specific heat capacity of water.
Q = tmcp
(7.0)(200g)(4.184)= 5857.6 J
2. Calculate the energy released per gram of cashew nut consumed in
the reaction.
5857.6 / 0.55= 10,650 J/gm
3. Using the following standards (carbohydrates (4 Cal/g), protein (4
Cal/g), and fats 9 Cal/g), determine the caloric content of a bag of your
favorite snack food.
This bag of chips contains 840 calories.
Conclusions: I found this lab very interesting. It demonstrated that I
can calculate the caloric content by using this method. It also gave me
an understanding how to use the different equations and showed how
those number came about. The lab also defined the term calorie as a
unit of energy, which is also a joule or a kilowatt-hour. I was sort of
confused on how to calculate the caloric content of each snack
because it wasnt very clear on how.
