Refection:
Standard 5.b. Professional Development, Partnerships, and
Advocacy
The three artifacts I choose to represent my mastery of standard 5b is my resume
that I revised in ESC 708; the second is a also from ESC 708 and its a one page
reflection about my knowledge of School Home Relationships based on my what I read
and EAS test prep results; and the third artifact, is a curriculum map from my personal
teaching experience in my first grade classroom.
Since creating these documents its has made me realize that much more that
teaching is not a one person job. A lot of people assume that because teachers are isolated
into their own rooms to teach that they are the sole provider of their students education.
However, there are so many factors and people that affect the academics of our students;
parents, administration, and your own professional growth are the legs to your tablewithout them you will easily fall as a teacher. My first artifact shows that I am and
continue to be a community resource with my teaching experience contributions like
working closely with parents enlisting their cooperation in the student learning process in
addition to improving student socialization skills. My second artifact is evidence that I
am knowledgeable and reflective of the home and school relationships; therefore, I
understand issues that affect ELLs education and support ELLs and their families
socially and politically. My third artifact shows proof of my advocacy and collaboration
with other teachers in school by demonstrate the ability to build partnerships with
colleagues to create a curriculum map for the upcoming unit we had planned on teaching.
These artifacts have contributed to my professional understanding by opening my
eyes to the multiple sources that must come together to make teaching a success. In order

to continue being an effective teacher, teachers must continue to learn from each other,
from parents, and even our students.
An area in which I would like to continue growing in is my awareness that parents
could and should be part of our everyday class life. Next time when I create a curriculum
map, I will try to create a section where I can include activities where parents could be
involved. . This way I have it imbedded into my unit and can plan notification letters and
activities for parents ahead of time.
