Students will identify the elements of line, shapes, space, color and texture; the
principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion
and pictorial representation (25.A.1d).
Students will identify the distinctive roles of artists and audiences (27.A.1a).

Overall Lesson Objective:


The overall theme for this lesson is Social Studies theme Time, Continuity, and Change.
Students were able to change their pieces on the last day, with adding or subtracting, to
make a change in the design that was beneficial for their meaning.
Day 2.
Objective One: Students will be able add or subtract to their mosaic.
Objective Two: Students will be able to analyze their piece and what they did.
Objective Three: Students will be able to write 3 sentences about their final piece.
Daily Objectives/Essential Question/Academic Language:
This lesson would be multiple days, probably 4-5. Start from learning to mosaic, to creating
a mosaic, to piecing together the class, then explaining and telling the class why specific
designs were done the way they were.
Essential question:
Day 1: What does your drawing tell you about yourself and how did you use your
imagination to create something that you can call your own?
Day 2: With this final drawing can you mosaic in between the lines?
Day 3: Do you feel comfortable grouting your plywood?
Day 4: With the colors you used, what does that add to your piece?
Day 5: What does your design say, mean, or imply?

Introduction:
Students will be told to sit in front of the white
board. From here I will explain how the lesson
will go, starting with asking questions about
the deeper meaning that each student is
trying to convey through their piece. If they do

their seats to start any last preparations for
their piece. They can use any materials given

Development:

Students will start with looking at their


piece and adding or subtracting any
elements that they think will benefit to
convey their deeper meaning to the
audience. They can use any of the
materials at their table in order to add or
subtract. All mark making on their piece
should reflect their meaning. They should
be thinking about how to write their
meaning and description out also. It will
help them with the adding or subtracting
final touches.

Students will be told to use different materials


to convey their meaning through the use of
adding (or subtracting) material to their piece.
They are to stay in their seats and I will be
walking around to have all students stay on
task and help with any last minute ideas to
help them portray their ideas.

Conclusion:
Once they have finished their artwork, pieces
of paper and pencil can be passed around.
Students will be told to write at least three (3)
sentences about what their artwork means or
says to an audience. The more writing and
explanation the better. They will also write two
(2) sentences about their process or what they
learned through the last Mosaic lessons. Clean
up is next, students will be given clean up jobs
to help with the process.

about their pieces meaning. 3 sentences
will before for what the deeper meaning is,
and 2 sentences will be for what they
learned. After the writing portion is of the
lesson is finished, they will put all of their
papers in a pile at the front table, and then
leave their mosaic artwork at their table.
All other material can be put back to the
main table and then tidy up their own
space. Check the floor for extra materials
that have fallen.

FEEDBACK NOTES:
I had to change a few things about the process but not a lot. This last class was very rushed.
I wish I had another day. But overall, I am very happy with the students testing out new
materials and creating a new piece of artwork they have never done. It would be beneficial
in the future to do more prep or longer demonstration, as well as a smaller piece of plywood
for the students.
