Resources
Warm Up Activity :
Students are provided with a laminated 100s chart and counters.
Individual whiteboards
Teacher models use of the 100s chart.
Whiteboard markers
Students place a single counter on #1. Does it have a partner? No =
Tissues to wipe out
odd number. Colour the odd number a particular colour.
Students then place two counters on #2. Does it have a partner? Yes Number cards
this means its an even number. Colour the even number a
particular colour.
Continue with 3do they all have a partner? No..theres one left
over = odd number. Colour in.
Continue doing this with all the numbers to 10. If all the counters
can have a partner, then they are an even number. If not, they are
an odd number.
Students begin to see a pattern going up in 2s
Students then work to identify the odd and even numbers.
Teacher can visually identify students who may be having difficulty
understanding the concept.

Warm Up Activity :

Students are split into


two teams. One team is
Odds and the other
Evens.
Each team member
takes turns to rolls the
dice and add the
numbers they roll to 100.
First team to reach 100
wins.
One rule though
Odds can only add the
odd numbers they roll.
Evens can only add the
even numbers they roll.

Fast finisher activities are provided to students who complete set


work earlier than other students.

Verbal revision of
odd and even
numbers

In the first instance, ask students to identify (by colouring in), the
even numbers from 1-10. What do they notice about the pattern?
Using their skills of addition, how much needs to be added to each
number to make the pattern? Now can they continue to 100?
Introduce concept of skip counting in 2s.
Ask the students to verbally recite the counting 1-20 and time them.
Make a note of the time on the board.
Now have them count to 20 using the coloured numbers on the
100s chart. Time them and make note. Which was faster?
Lesson requires explicit instruction by teacher use whiteboard?
Students then identify skip count by 2s to 100 by independently
colouring the 100s chart. What do they notice?
Every even number finishes in 0,2,4,6 or 8.
Teacher is able to assess for understanding by supervising
completion of hundreds chart.
