EE3007 POWER ELECTRONICS

Course Plan

Prerequisite:

Nil

Objectives:
1. Student should be in a position to list the basic construction details and
characteristics of Power Semiconductor switches and their operation as well
as identify the appropriate switch for a particular application.
2. Student will be capable of differentiating various Power Electronic
Converters,
principle of
Operation of each one of them and their
application.
3. Student should be in a position to analysis and design various power
electronic converters and commutation techniques used in the converters.
4. Student could design the apt power electronic converter for processing
the power, to suit the load requirement.
Portions for First Test:
Module 1: Power Semiconductor Switches
Power diodes - Basic structure and V-I characteristics - various types - DIACs Basic
structure and V-I characteristics TRIACs - Basic structure and V-I characteristics
-Thyristors - basic structure - static and dynamic characteristics - device specifications
and ratings - methods of turning on - gate triggering circuit using UJT - methods of
turning off - commutation circuits. IGBTs - Basic structure and V-I characteristics.
MOSFETs - Basic structure and V-I characteristics.
Module 2: Rectifiers
Line frequency phase controlled rectifiers using SCR Single Phase Half wave rectifier
with R and RL loads Full wave half controlled and fully controlled converters with
continuous and constant currents Input side harmonics and power factor.
Assignment -1: 09/02/15.
First Test : 10/02 16/02 2015.
Portions for Second Test:
Module 2: Rectifiers (Contd..)
Effect of source inductance Three Phase - Half wave rectifier with R and RL loads - Full
wave fully controlled converters with continuous and constant currents
Module 3: Inverters & Cycloconverters
Inverters Single phase inverters series, parallel and bridge inverters. Single Phase
Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) inverters Basic circuit and operation. AC regulators single phase ac regulator with R and RL loads - sequence control of ac regulators single phase to single phase cycloconverters - basic principle of operation.
Assignment -2: 31/03/15.

Second Test : 06/04 10/04 2015


Module 4: DC DC Converters
Choppers - principle of operation - step-up and step-down choppers. Switching
regulators - Buck regulators - Boost regulators - Buck-boost regulators - Switched
mode power supply - principle of operation and analysis
Assignment 3: 30/04/15.
End Exam : 05/05 15/05 2015.

Evaluation Policy :

: 20 Marks Each.
