Dimensional Tolerances - API 650-14: Sr. Item Tolerance

This document outlines dimensional tolerances for various components of an API 650 storage tank according to section 7.5 of the API 650 standard. It specifies tolerances for the plumbness of the tank shell, roundness of the shell courses, peaking and banding at vertical and horizontal shell welds, flat spots on the shell plates, levelness of foundations, positioning of nozzles and manholes, and tilt of flange faces. Tolerances become tighter for larger diameter nozzles and looser for manholes compared to other components.

Dimensional tolerances API 650-14

Sr.

Item

Tolerance
The maximum out-of-Plumbness of the top of the shell relative to the bottom of the shell shall
not exceed 1/200 of the total tank height.

1.

Plumbness (7.5.2)

The out-of-Plumbness in one shell course shall not exceed the permissible variations for flatness
and waviness as specified in ASTM A6M/A6, ASTM A20M/A20, or ASTM A480M/A480,
whichever is applicable.
According to Tank Diameter:

2.

Roundness (7.5.3)

3.

Peaking (7.5.4.a)

Deviations at vertical weld joints shall not exceed 13 mm. (by using Sweep board with 90 cm
long with the same radius of the tank)

4.

Banding (7.5.4.b)

Deviations at horizontal weld joints shall not exceed 13 mm. (by using 90 cm straight edge
vertical sweep board)

5.

Flat spots (7.5.4.c)

Shall not exceed the appropriate plate flatness and waviness as required by ASTM A6, A20
or a480 as applicable)
For horizontal foundation:
1- Where a concrete ring wall is provided under the shell, the top of the ring wall shall be level
within 3 mm in any 9 m of the circumference
2- Where a concrete ring wall is not provided, the foundation under the shell shall be level

6.

Foundations
(7.5.5)

within 3 mm in any 3 m of the circumference

For sloping foundation:
1- Where a concrete ring wall is provided, 3 mm in any 9 m of circumference
2- Where a concrete ring wall is not provided, 3 mm in any 3 m of circumference

Nozzles (excluding manholes) shall be installed within the following tolerances:

1- specified projection from outside of tank shell to extreme face of flange: 5 mm
2- elevation of shell nozzle or radial location of a roof nozzle: 6 mm
7.

Nozzles (7.5.6)

3- flange tilt in any plane, measured on the flange face:

1/2 degree for nozzles greater than NPS 12 in. nominal diameter

3 mm at the outside flange diameter for nozzles NPS 12 and smaller

4- flange bolt hole orientation: 3 mm

Manholes shall be installed within the following tolerances:
8.

Shell Manholes
(7.5.87)

1- specified projection from outside of shell to extreme face of flange, 13 mm

2- elevation and angular location, 13 mm
3- flange tilt in any plane, measured across the flange diameter, 13 mm
