Curriculum News
In Journeys, we will soon be reading The Signmakers Assistant which is a
humorous fiction selection. Students will identify and analyze text and graphic
features. We will continue to analyze the main characters through their thoughts,
actions and words. The students loved their guided reading biographies last week
and we will finish them up this week. Ask your child what biography they are
reading in guided reading and ask them about the importance of this person. Our
spelling skill is words with ar. The weekly spelling test will be on Friday.
In writing, students are working on personal narratives. Included in their stories is
an introduction, which includes characters, the setting and a hook to get the reader
interested. In the body events are in sequential order and good transitions are
used. In the concluding paragraph students will express how they feel and any
lessons learned from the experience. This week we will focus on revising their
narratives to improve the quality. Students will add onomatopoeia (sound words),
dialogue, similes and show not tell. Additionally, students will take their narrative to
the publishing step for a hallway display.
In math, we are finishing up Chapter 11 on counting money. After that, we will
begin working with fractions. Students will identify equal parts of a whole, identify
fractions based on shaded parts of a shape and begin to compare fractions. They
will identify halves, thirds, and fourths. Please continue to review money, as it is a
very important life skill.

On April 10-12 there is a fossil, gem, mineral

and jewelry show at Raritan Center.

We are starting The Edison Unit in Social Studies. Students will learn of the
accomplishments of Thomas Edison. They will explore what our town looked like
and compare it to today. Our class will explore our districts website along with
videos of famous inventions. On April 21st, we will go to The Edison Museum and
Tower. Stay tuned for trip information this week.
