Coalition Mission Statement:
The purpose of this project is to bring about awareness regarding the LGBTQ community
amongst college students and working professionals to familiarize them of the terms Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transexual/Transgendered, and Queer/Question and to encourage people that are
unaware of the LGBTQ Community to be aware of it and to engage in a positive change.
Theory Of Change:
The issue that we are focusing on is to provide knowledge and understanding regarding
the LGBTQIA community. Many people only know the acronym of LGBTQ which is Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer. What people do not know about is that it is actually
LGBTQIA. the IA stands for Intersex and Assexual. Intersex deals with the genetics so they are
born like that. Assexual is when an individual does not feel any attraction to any sexual
orientation so they feel abnormal about it. There have been many laws of approving same-sex
marriage in some states so people would think that it is getting better. However the truth is that
many homosexuals are still worried and are still in the closet about their sexual orientation in
the fear of being hurt or judged. In just this year of 2015 there are about

The LGBTQIA needs support and activities from the community that can accept them and
protect their human rights. Although our coalition is not an organization who have had an impact
to the LGBTQIA in the past, we believe in equal rights and we want to make a difference.
Everyone should be able to have their equal rights regardless of their sexual orientation. Our
coalition would love to take part in action by promoting the awareness LGBTQIA and welcome
them to know that there are others who support them. Little difference will become big
difference.
The two models of success that is similar to our project is GLAAD organization and the GSA
network.
1. The GLAAD organization or the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, started by
putting pressure on media organization to end their homophobic reporting. After years of
rallying, GLAAD rewrites the script for LGBT acceptance and tackles tough issues to shape the
narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD uses mass media such as
print, broadcasting, and online news sources to not only build support for equality of all but also
to educate us and change the hearts and minds across the country and around the
world.(GLAAD)

2. Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) is a student-run club, typically in a high school or middle school,
which provides a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to
sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and work to end homophobia and
transphobia.(GSA) The GSA provides support to those struggling with finding their identities as
well as their gender preferences. The GSA proudly organizes events and activities to support
them such as Pride Week or LGBTQ Awareness events. They also offers a variety of
workshops that educate and help the community and school to learn more about the LGBTQ
community and help teachers , parents, and the community how to become an alliance.

Both of these models strive to raise awareness about not only the LGBTQIA community but help
protect their human rights just like our coalition group is trying to.Their methods include
utilizing the mass media, holding events in support as well as raise awareness, and educate not
only a small part of the community on how to be allies but to also change the hearts and minds of
those around us.

Community Partners:
Our coalitions on-campus resource is the Pride Center and we specifically meet with
Indiana Jason Womack, a student assistant for the Womens Resource Center, every other

Wednesdays. In our meetings, we discuss plans and ideas for our project and learn more about
the LGBTQ community and contemporary issues that occurs.
Our off-campus resource is with Rachael Hudson, an operations manager from the
Gender Health Center. We interviewed Rachael Hudson about the Gender Health Centers
mission and more about who she is and her story. We are still discussing with Ms. Hudson about
what we can do to improve on spreading awareness about the issues that occurs within the
LGBTQ community.
Project Synopsis:
For our coalition project, we will be hosting a movie screening during Pride week here at
Sacramento State. The movie that we will be screening is Rent, which will be screened in the
Multi-cultural Center. Rent is a musical about a group of friends that are trying to find their
identity. They face many struggles and conflicts like having AIDS, being homeless, and trying to
figure out who they should become. Our purpose of this movie screening is to mainly discuss
the themes we found in the movie, which is appreciating and accepting who you are, sex
diseases, poverty-social tension, and gentrification, and LGBTQ community and phobias. We
hope to promote awareness about how the LGBTQ community still has many conflicts that they
are dealing with. We will also have a raffle for the audience and have prizes for them as an
incentive.
The steps that we have taken to implement our project are that we have talked to Indiana
about using the Multi-Cultural Center and we have been approved to use it. We are also going to
talk to the Epicure Restaurant on campus so that they can cater at our event. As a group we will
also be going out to stores and get prizes that we can have to give to the audience so that we can
donate the money to our chosen organization which is the Gender Health Center.

Budget Proposal:
Our coalitions proposed budget is divided in the following:
Food/Refreshments: $100
Shirts: $50
Prizes/Supplies: $25 - $50
Gas Expenditure: $20
Total: $195 - $220
