Challenging Behaviors

This document provides an overview of challenging behaviors for students with autism and strategies for addressing them. It defines common challenging behaviors like noncompliance and aggression and explains they are often a form of communication to express wants or needs. Understanding the antecedents, behavior, and consequences (ABC's) of behaviors can help determine the reason for them, such as being bored, tired, or stressed. The document recommends modifying antecedents, reinforcing alternative behaviors, and using strategies like extinction, response cost, and time outs to reduce challenging behaviors. It emphasizes teaching students new communication skills to replace challenging behaviors.

Challenging Behaviors

By: Rebecca Daily, M.Ed

Quick Side Notes

You can read. This presentation will NOT be a shorter
version of your reading assignment. However, I will try to
hit the high notes of your readings.
Ive been in the academic world (where you are) and in
the real world. There is a HUGE difference. I will most
likely not use the specific terms from your readings. I will
be using the terms that I use with parents, with students,
and with other co-workers.
I LOVE questions and dialogue. We may go off subject.
Thats okay! You are more likely to learn the material if
youre interested.
READY?

What Are Challenging Behaviors?

Noncompliance
Aggression
Stereotypic Behaviors (Stimming)

Why Are They Exhibiting

Challenging Behaviors?
Short Answer: They are trying to
communicate. Specifically, they want
something.
Your Job: To figure out what they are
trying to communicate.

What Are They Trying to Tell Me?!?!

I dont want to be here.

This is boring.
Im hungry.
Im tired.
I dont know what you want me to do.
Id rather play than work.
Etc., Etc., Etc.

Learning Their Language

Remember: ALL challenging behaviors are
a method to communicate.
Look at what occurs before the behavior,
the behavior itself, and what happens as a
result of that behavior.
Often referred to as the ABCs of Behavior.
Antecedent
Behavior
Consequence

What is an Antecedent?
The thing that triggers the behavior, not necessarily the
thing that occurs right before the behavior.
Possible antecedents:

Loud noise
Transition
Needs to use the bathroom
Bored of the task
Stress
A headache or other medical issue
They did not take medications
You said Houston
Flashback
Basicallyit could be anything.

Examples

Caitey- stress
Mark- medical issue
DW- did not take meds, stress
Bob- flashback
Kiarda- sensory
AM- said Houston

Or You Could Do a FBA

PROS
Provides data.
Can be useful if you
have no ideas what
may be triggering the
behavior.
Can help you
determine if the
strategy you are using
is working.

CONS
Very time consuming.
Typically requires
more than one person:
One to manage the
behavior, one to do
data collection.
Does not lend itself
well to uncontrolled
environments.
Behaviors can have
multiple reasons for
occurring.

So, Now Youre Bilingual

Unfortunately, their language is not
spoken by most of society. Now what?
They taught you their language, now you
get to teach them yours.

But how???

Modify the Antecedent

Examples:
Change the environment
Visual or verbal reminders
Task modification

Reinforcement of Behaviors
Behaviors they cant do while doing the
challenging behavior
(DRI- Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior)

Behaviors that are more socially appropriate

(DRC- Differential Reinforcement of Communicative Behavior)

Behaviors that are anything different than the

challenging behavior
(DRO- Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviors)

Behaviors that occurs less frequently than

before
(DRL- Differential Reinforcement of Lower Levels of Behavior)

My Personal Favorites
Reinforcing incompatible behaviors
Reinforcing socially appropriate behaviors
Functional Communication Training

Other Options
(Should be used with reinforcement strategies)

Extinction:
Dont provide the thing that is reinforcing the
behavior.

Caution:
The challenging behaviors will get worse
before they get better. (Extinction Burst). Can
be difficult to determine if the strategy is not
working or youre just dealing with the
extinction burst.

Response Cost:
Remove something theyve earned
Tokens, free time, etc.

Removal should occur as close the

challenging behavior occurring as possible.
Should be allowed to earn it back.

Time Out:
Removal from the reinforcement and
environment.

Time Out vs. Break

Time Out
Punishment
Focuses on the
negative
Legal concerns
Example- Philip

Break
More socially
appropriate
Focuses on the
positive
Acknowledges that
everyone needs
breaks
Can be transitioned
into a coping strategy
Examples- EW, Connor

Overcorrection
Positive Practice Overcorrection
Do the socially acceptable behavior
repeatedly related to the challenging behavior.
Example- Connor

Restitutional Overcorrection
Fix the damage resulting from challenging
behavior.

Modeling
(Not mentioned in readings)
People are observant, even people with
autism. They just may not be paying
attention when you expect them to. Model
the behavior you want them to use!!!
