Collecting and Graphing Data - 11:11 Word

This document provides a lesson plan for a kindergarten math lesson on collecting and graphing data. The objective is for students to gather data using tally marks, and display the data in object graphs and tables. Students will collect data on whether they have brothers or sisters. They will then recreate the data using objects like unifix cubes at their tables. The teacher will assess students using a checklist and provide differentiated support for some students, such as writing numbers for categories or extra assistance.

Unifix cubes
Play-doh
Wooden cubes
20 Graph Templates
Procedure:
1. Before beginning the lesson, all materials will be gathered and organized. The bulletin board
paper will be put on the small white board. The unfix cubes, play-doh, and wooden cubes
will be placed at three separate tables. A graph template will be placed at each students seat.
2. I will invite the students to the rug by table. I will call on tables that are quiet and attentive.
3. Once all of the students are settled on the rug, we will sing Open, Shut Them.
4. I will explain to the students that we are going to collect data to make a graph. I will explain
that we will be answering the question: Do you have a brother or a sister?
5. Before collecting the data, I will explain there are four different options: brother, sister, both,
neither. I will give the students a few seconds to think. The students will raise their hand for
to answer. I will explain that they can only choose one.
6. I will start with brother, then sister, then both, and then neither.
7. I will count the hands of each student and record the data on the graph.
8. After all the students have answered, we will make observations about the graph.
9. Before sending the students back to their seats, I will instruct them to place their hands in
their laps. Then, I will send the students by table back to their seats.
10. When all the students are in their seats, I will explain the next activity. I will explain that
once table has unifix cubes, one table has play-doh, and another table has wooden cubes. The
students will use the items to recreate the data on a graph template.

11. As the students are making their graphs, I will walk around the room to assist students. I will
ask students that finish early to use crayons and make a bar graph with the data.
