1. What is our problem?
The problem for Hector Gaming Company is that there are no preset long range goals and objectives. Also, there is a lack of focus in resource allocation as the managers were unable to make efficient use of the available resources. 2. Identify some symptoms of the problem?
Lack of actual practice of team work.
Lack of proper Communication among the employees. Many Projects are unable to meet the deadline. Each project manager believes his or her project is more important than others. Exceeding the estimated budget to complete the projects. Confusion as to who the target market is. No priority teams to prioritize projects.
3. What is the major cause of the problem?
One of the major causes is that HGC is growing too fast at a rate 80% a year for the past couple of years. It means Hector has lot of potential market share but with many organizational politics. They should use the project portfolio matrix to decide which projects are aligned with the companys competitive strategy and should implement those projects. Not paying attention to internal matters is also one of the causes for the problem. Sally Peters seemed to be shocked with the problems which mean there was a lack of proper attention. 4. Action Plan: In the earlier stages Hector was towards the functional organization of projects but slowly they shifted to dedicated project team which is a good move. The following actions solve the problems faced by Hector to a greater extent. Possibly hire an HR director to make sure proper resources are allocated accordingly. Use decision variables in project screening matrix to decide which projects to take up instead of having too many projects taking place at a time. Having group outing for the team which increases the bonding and thereby showcases good team work. Implementing a corporate structure for Hector Gaming Company. Sally Peters should involve more and concentrate more on the active projects which are close to deadlines.
