Memo Perkins Industrial Cabinet Co

1) A task force at Perkins Industrial Cabinet Co. analyzed the quotation process but neglected the order process, overlooking quality resource management (QRM) principles. This led to only a 30% reduction in manufacturing lead time (MLT) rather than the potential 70-75%. 2) Recommendations include analyzing the entire quoting and order process and applying QRM at every stage, having managers oversee the whole process, working simultaneously after order receipt to reduce lead time, running job tickets more than once daily to move folders faster, and providing cross-training for combined workforce efforts during peaks. 3) Reanalyzing the total life cycle with QRM principles could help streamline the process and reduce MLT

MEMO

Perkins Industrial Cabinet Co.

February 23th, 2015
To,
Mr. Roger Perkins,
President, PICC
This is a summarized message to you about our findings and recommendations on the basis
of data given to us. QRM implementation in any area of business correctly leads to MLT
reduction by about 70-75% but in PICC, task force came up with only 30% reduction in MLT
for which reasons are given below:
1. Time study done by the task force mainly consists of quotation process and neglects
to address the order process.
2. They overlooked QRM principle and didnt try to introduce new ways of completing
jobs.
3. Task force failed to address the pending work in the entire process.
4. There was over the fence engineering during the entire process. The work was not
hand over to the next department unless it was completed by the department.

Recommendations:
1. The whole process must be analysed and QRM ought to be executed in every stage of
the process.
2. There should be top-down control of the quoting and order process by the manager
and should have responsibility for whole process inside the cell.
3. They should work simultaneously right after the order received due to which the lead
time will be significantly reduced. E.g. When order is placed manufacturing
department should start working simultaneously with other departments, by reviewing
the design and making list of the tools and machinery required.
4. Job ticket should run more than once in a day in the whole process in order to move
job folders faster. New strategies should be introduced in the process.
5. They should consider non value added time for both processes for its correct
evaluation
6. PICC should provide cross training to the workforce so that, during peak periods
there would be combined efforts of the workforce to work efficiently which will help
to reduce the lead time thus will help in satisfying the QRM methodology.
7. During the start of the project, site conditions should be verified for the items quoted
by the customer. This will help in reducing the investment cost of PICC. Also if the
information is inaccurate PICC should not be held liable for the losses occurred.

Re-conducting the time study for the total life cycle of the process will help PICC to
streamline and build a more efficient process. Using the principles of QRM, PICC will help
to come closer to 75% reduction in lead time.
Thank you for giving us an opportunity to work with you, looking forward for your success.
Best Regards,
Akshay.
