In our film the 'Evil within' we subvert the typical thriller codes
and conventions a lot. The way we represented Iqra, a young
girl is very different to how the audience would have been used
to seeing the role played by young females, as we had
represented Iqra as being the very evil, emotionless and full of
hate. These are the type of qualities that the viewers would not
expect in a young female character, so it adds the element of
surprise. In our film Iqra plays the antagonist, which the
viewers may find as odd as this role is commonly played my
strong masculine male characters. Iqra kills innocent people by
supernatural powers which she had discovered, but not only
does she kill the in brutal and horrific way, she foreshadows
their murders by drawing them before she kills them.

Another way that our film has subverted the typical thriller
convents is by making the victims mostly male as featured in
our opening scene. The first and main victim in our film is Arif.
He plays the complete opposite character role of a male
character that the viewers would expect to see in a thriller film.
He plays the role of a weak, vulnerable and innocent. The racial
background of him and Iqra is very significant, as is it not very

common to see Bengali people play roles in thriller films. The


audience may find this to be very new and intriguing and it
may help attract a larger customer base.

One convention that our thriller film does adopt is the


psychologist character being from white background. It is very
common in thriller films and films from other genres where the
psychologist is a white female character.
