Introduction Worksheet

This document contains the answers to questions from a chemistry worksheet. It discusses 3 diagrams of molecules: The first diagram shows 5 polar molecules that would form hydrogen bonds between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The second diagram depicts non-polar molecules that would interact through van der Waals forces. The third diagram portrays 2 ions - a phosphate group and ammonium ion - that would experience electrostatic attraction between their opposite charges.

CHEM 121 Introduction Worksheet

1. Answer the following questions about figure 1 below.

Figure 1
a) How many molecules are present in the diagram? 5
b) Are the molecules polar or non-polar? Polar
c) If the molecules are polar, write in the charges on each of the atoms of each
molecule on the diagram.
d) State the type of intermolecular force of attraction that would exist between the
molecules. Hydrogen bonding
e) By using dots, show where this force of attraction would occur between the
molecules on the diagram.

2. Answer the following questions about figure 2 below:

Figure 2
a. Are the molecules polar or non-polar?

Non-Polar

b. What type of intermolecular force of attraction would occur between the

molecules?

Vander waal Forces

3. Answer the following questions about figure 3 below:

Figure 3

a. What type of intermolecular force of attraction would take place between the two
molecules above?

Electrostatic Interactions

b. State the reason for your answer.

Because on the phosphate group there are negatively charged oxygen and on the
ammonium ion there are positively charged hydrogen bonds and as a result the
oppositely charge ions the groups will bond together.
