Structure and Function of The Brain Notes

The document discusses the structure and function of the human brain. It describes the major internal structures of the brain including the cerebral cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, cerebellum, and brain stem. It also outlines some of the functions of different brain regions such as the cerebellum's role in motor control and balance. Additionally, the document discusses various medical imaging techniques used to study the brain such as CT scans, MRI scans, and fMRI which have helped scientists learn about the brain's structure and activity.

Studying the brain:

Scientists can use animal studies to investigate the functions of different
parts of the brain. This can entail causing brain damage to the animal, or
using electrodes, to study the effects. Also it is possible to observe
humans who have suffered brain damage or brain disease to determine
the functioning of different regions. Medical imaging technology has also
helped with the study of the structure and function of the brain.
CT Scans:
Computerised tomography, or CT, scans use X rays can be used to identify
major structures and problems such as tumours and brain aneurisms
(swollen arteries).

measures the changes in oxygen uptake and

how the brain functions during different types
