Cross Reference Feature

To insert a cross-reference in a Word document, position the cursor where it is needed and select Cross-reference from the Insert tab. Choose the item to reference such as a heading or figure, then select the specific item from the list. To insert the document's filename, select Field from the Quick Parts button and choose FileName from the Document Information category. Options can include formatting and including the file path.

Cross reference feature

1.

Position the cursor where you would like to insert the cross reference

2.

Open the Insert tab

3.

In the Links section, click Cross-reference

4.

Select the type of item you would like to reference. For example, you can select
headings, footnotes or numbered items.
NOTE: To reference figures or tables, you must use Words Caption feature

Other options in the dialog box will change automatically. The options will let
you select from available items to reference. For example, you will see a list of
headings or numbered items from which to choose

After you have made your selection, click Insert

Steps to Insert a Documents Filename


1.

Move your cursor to where the filename should appear.

2.

In the Insert tab, Text group, click the Quick Parts button, then choose Field.

3.

In the Field box, change the Categories: to Document Information.

4.

In the Field Names: list, choose FileName.

5.

If you want the path included, under Field Option, check the Include the Path
box.

6.

In the Field Properties section, you can specify the format, ie. uppercase,
lowercase, for how the path/filename displays
