EARTH HOUR

The worlds largest campaign for the planet

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and
businesses switched off their lights for one hour. This is an annual
international event created by the WWF (World Wide Fund for
Nature/World Wildlife Fund), held on the last Saturday of March, that asks
households and businesses to turn off their non-important lights and
electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to
take action on climate change.
In 2011, Earth Hour saw hundreds of millions of people across 135
countries switch off for an hour. But it also marked the start of something
new going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate
change. And with the power of social networks behind the Earth Hour
message, we hope to attract even more participation so we can build a
truly global community committed to creating a more sustainable planet.
Earth Hour 2012 will take place on Saturday, March 31 at 8:30 pm, local
time. From London to Sydney, New York and Singapore, people across the
world will be joining WWF to switch off their lights. Its a reminder to us all
that we only have one planet Earth. And its an urgent message that we
want to reduce the impact of our energy system on the planet.

Go Beyond the Hour for building a future in which

people live in harmony with nature

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

The World Environment Day (WED) was established by the United Nations
General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm
Conference on the Human Environment. WED is commemorated each
year on 5 June in a different city. The UN uses WED to stimulate
awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public
action.
WED 2011
India was the global host of WED 2011 on 5 June. This year's theme
Forests: Nature at Your Service underscores the link between quality
of life and the health of forests and forest ecosystems. The WED theme
also supports this year's UN International Year of Forests.
WED 2012
The 2012 theme for WED is Green Economy: Does it include you? The
host will be Brazil which also hosted WED celebrations back in 1992
around the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. WED this year will help to raise
awareness on the serious impacts of carrying on with business as usual.
Through engaging governments in action and your spreading the word on
the importance of a Green Economy, this collective effort will preserve
nature, while achieving growth, and encourage sustainable development.
